Written by Daniel Graeber for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The March average for U.S. exports of liquefied natural gas set a record, with levels some 1.5 billion cubic feet per day higher than at the end of 2024, IIR Energy data showed.

Delivering its first batch of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in 2016, the United States emerged as the world leader in exports by 2022. IIR Data showed U.S.-sourced exports of LNG set a new record in March, with the average of 15.9 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d).

"We've seen a surge in new LNG exports since December, when the Plaquemines facility started receiving its first batch of feedgas," said Maria Sanchez, a natural gas products and senior energy analyst at IIR Energy. "Since then, we've seen exports tick up some 1.5 billion cubic feet per day."

IIR Energy confirmed the facility began drawing in more than 100 million cubic feet of natural gas per day for liquefaction operations in mid-December. Operated by Venture Global LNG (NYSE:VG) (Arlington, Virginia), the Plaquemines facility is fed primarily by the Gator Express Pipeline, a network tied to larger arteries carrying natural gas from regional shale deposits such as Haynesville.

The U.S. Department of Energy reported recently that it expected Haynesville to be among the more productive gas basins in the country. The first-ever cargo from Plaquemines was loaded on December 26 onto the Venture Global Bayou, one of nine new vessels in Venture Global's fleet that are designed to transport LNG. The cargo was shipped to Germany.

Once fully operational, the 18-train facility at Plaquemines will be the second-largest LNG export facility in the country, with about 3.3 Bcf/d in processing capacity, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Data showed the facility operating well above its current capacity as of Monday.

The U.S. ascendence in LNG developed over three presidential administrations, with much of that period led by Democrats. Though LNG exports increased during his tenure, former President Joe Biden, a Democrat, paused new permits while his administration studied the potential emissions up and down the supply chain.

President Donald Trump, a Republican keen on bolstering U.S. energy dominance, has made LNG a priority so far during his second, non-consecutive term in office.

In March, Energy Secretary Chris Wright awarded an export permit extension for Delfin LNG, an offshore LNG export terminal some 40 nautical miles from the coast of Louisiana. An extension for existing permits for trade to countries without a U.S. free-trade agreement was necessary because of construction issues during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Delfin marked the second facility to get a permit extension from the Trump administration so far this year, after Golden Pass. Also, Commonwealth LNG received a new permit earlier this year.

Feedgas could be an issue given the limited takeaway capacity from basins such as the Permian. IIR Energy found that natural gas production during the weekend was more than 106 Bcf/d, though a force majeure declaration on the El Paso natural gas pipeline, operated under Kinder Morgan's umbrella, should limit flows.

Repairs on the network should be completed by Saturday.
