Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Illinois presents quite a variety of industrial activity. While an automotive plant represents the single largest project under construction in the state, the public transport sector also weighs in heavily. Various other industries and projects lead to $20.7 billion worth of industrial projects in Illinois that are currently under construction.
The automotive plant under construction comes from electric vehicle (EV) maker Rivian Automotive Incorporated (Irvine, California), whose lineup includes SUVs and pickups. Rivian is upgrading and expanding its plant in Normal, Illinois, near the center of the state. Rivian is constructing a 1.14 million-square-foot building addition to the 3 million-square-foot plant to enable the manufacture of the R2, a mid-size electric SUV, which is expected to begin rolling off the lines in 2026. The expansion will expand the plant's production capacity from 150,000 to 215,000 vehicles annually. A couple of rail projects are under construction under the auspices of the Chicago Transit Authority, the more extensive of which is the Red Line expansion. The heavy-rail transit line will be extended by 5.3 miles, including four new stations. The work kicked off in the summer of 2021 and is expected to be wrapped up early next year. Another $1 billion-plus project comes from Walmart Incorporated (Bentonville, Arkansas) and still has about two years of construction remaining. Walmart is building a state-of-the-art perishable food distribution center in Belvidere, about 75 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. "Project Yukon," as it is known, will use the latest equipment and systems to handle fresh produce, eggs, dairy products, frozen goods and flowers, using a high degree of automation to ensure reliable product delivery to area stores. The 1.2 million-square-foot facility is expected to begin operating in mid-2027. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Food & Beverage Project Database can click here for more details on the project.
Additional renewable energy also is coming to Illinois in a big way in the form of more than a dozen wind and solar projects under construction. Among these is the Top Hat Wind Energy Center in Logan County being developed by renewables giant Invenergy LLC (Chicago, Illinois). General contractor M.A. Mortenson Company (Minneapolis, Minnesota) broke ground on the project late last year, beginning the process of placing 50 turbines, each rated at 2.5 megawatts (MW), to achieve aggregate generation of 125 MW. The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's GMI Power Project Database can click here for more details on the project.
Examples of solar projects include Tenaska Energy Incorporated's (Omaha, Nebraska) upcoming photovoltaic facility near Eldorado, in the south of the state. Engineering, procurement and construction contractor SOLV Energy (San Diego, California) is placing approximately 390,000 solar panels that will provide about 150 MW of power generation when the plant goes online toward the end of this year. Industrial Info is tracking several data center projects underway in Illinois. In Elk Grove, Aligned Data Centers (Plano, Texas) recently began the process of demolishing four existing office buildings at four addresses along a single street in order to construct a single, two-story, 520,000-square-foot data center building. Construction is expected to be completed in about a year's time. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.
