Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Indiana is home to a broad range of Industrial Manufacturing Industry projects under construction, including those in the automotive and distribution & warehouse sectors. On Wednesday, Entek International LLC (ENTEK) (Lebanon, Oregon) broke ground on a $1.5 billion lithium-ion battery part manufacturing plant in the state, where Industrial Info is tracking an additional $6.4 billion worth of Industrial Manufacturing projects under construction.

ENTEK's $1.5 billion plant in Terre Haute, Indiana, about 70 miles west of Indianapolis, will manufacture battery separators for lithium-ion batteries to be used in electric vehicles (EVs) and grid-scale energy-storage systems. Separators are positioned between a battery's anode and cathode to prevent them from coming into contact. The 1.4 million-square-foot manufacturing facility will produce enough battery separators per year to supply material for about 1.4 million vehicles annually. ENTEK is the only U.S.-owned and operated manufacturer of wet-process lithium-ion battery separators, according to a news release on the groundbreaking. Clayco Construction (Chicago, Illinois) is performing design-build services for the project. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can learn more from a detailed project report.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by federal, state and local officials, including U.S. Rep. Larry Bucshon (R-Indiana), who applauded the project in a statement: "The partnership with ENTEK will ensure that Indiana remains at the forefront of the U.S. manufacturing sector and create momentum toward even more successes in the Indiana automotive industry and the growing EV field."

The highest-valued manufacturing project under construction in Indiana being tracked by Industrial Info falls right into that category: Stellantis NV's (NYSE:STLA) (Hoofddorp, Netherlands) $2.5 billion EV battery-manufacturing plant in Kokomo. The 20-building, 3.3 million-square-foot facility will have an annual production capacity of 23 gigawatt-hours of batteries per year for EVs produced at the automaker's North American assembly plants. Stellantis manufactures Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram and Fiat vehicles. Construction kicked off this year and is expected to be completed in 2025. Subscribers can click here for more information.

SH America Incorporated (Indianapolis) is at work on revamping an existing facility in Roanoke, to manufacture EV battery caps for Stellantis and Samsung SDI America Incorporated, a subsidiary of Samsung Group (Seoul, South Korea). The Hagerman Group (Fort Wayne, Indiana) is providing general contracting services for the project, which is expected to wrap up in mid-2024. Click here for the project report.

Also underway is Toyota Motor Corporation's (NYSE:TM) (Toyota City, Japan) $803 million retool of its assembly plant in Princeton, which began in 2021. The plant produces about 420,000 vehicles a year, including the popular Highlander SUV, and the retool will enable the plant to produce two new electric SUVs. The project is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter. Subscribers can click here for the project report.

Meanwhile, FedEx Corporation (NYSE:FDX) (Memphis, Tennessee) is underway with an $1.5 billion expansion of its air hub in Indianapolis. The project entails constructing 16 new aircraft gates, two package-sorting facilities and another building to handle truck deliveries. The aim is to have the facility process 147,000 packages per hour upon completion in the fourth quarter. FedEx has said it will move some of its heavy maintenance operations from Los Angeles, California, to Indianapolis when the company's lease expires at a Los Angeles air facility in 2024.
