The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported earlier this month that U.S. steel mills shipped nearly 80 million net tons this year through October, a 4.6% increase versus shipments of more than 76 million net tons in the first 10 months of 2017.
At the same time, total steel imports through October were down 10.6% from the same period in 2017. Total steel imports for the first 10 months of 2018 were more than 29 million tons, according to the AISI, which used preliminary U.S. Census Bureau data. Imports, long considered the bane of the U.S. steel industry, have dropped considerably as a result of the Trump administration's imposition of a 25% import tariff on steel items. Industrial Info also is tracking $1.68 billion in planned steel project completions for 2019 in the U.S. Some of the larger projects that are expected to see completion are:

Some of the larger steel projects that are expected to kick off construction in 2019 include:
- BlueScope Steel Limited's (Melbourne, Australia) flat roll steel minimill expansion in Delta, Ohio. The company is evaluating plans to build a new melt shop and install a third electric arc furnace and a second slab caster to increase capacity by 600,000 to 900,000 metric tons per year. The steel minimill currently has a capacity of 2.1 million tons per year. Kickoff is expected in third-quarter 2019, with completion in first-quarter 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
- JSW Group's (Mumbai, India) South Steel Mill electric arc furnace addition in Mingo Junction, Ohio. JSW is performing equipment studies for the electric arc furnace addition, which would double the mill's capacity to 3 million tons per year. Kickoff is expected in second-quarter 2019, with completion in third-quarter 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
- Nucor Corporation's (NYSE:NUE) (Charlotte, North Carolina) steel rebar micro mill in Frostproof, Florida. Nucor plans to build a 256,000-square-foot micro mill capable of producing up to 350,000 tons per year of steel rebar. The project is expected to kick off in first-quarter 2019, with completion in early 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Industrial Info also is tracking $1.68 billion in planned steel project completions for 2019 in the U.S. Some of the larger projects that are expected to see completion are:
- JSW Group's steel pipe and plate mill melt shop addition in Baytown, Texas. Construction of the 1 million ton-per-year melt shop, along with installation of a new 120-ton electric arc furnace and a 120-inch wide caster, began in the fourth quarter this year. Completion is expected in late 2019. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
- Nucor Corporation's Bourbonnais steel mill expansion in Illinois. The project, which kicked off construction in second-quarter 2018, consists of constructing a 500,000-ton-per-year merchant bar quality mill, including a new 91-ton-per-hour walking beam furnace and other equipment. Completion is expected in late 2019. For more information. See Industrial Info's project report.
- Nucor Corporation's galvanizing line and pickling line addition at the Ghent Gallatin Thin Slab Mill in Kentucky. The project, which kicked off construction in early 2018, includes installation of a new 500,000-ton-per-year "heat-to-coat" hot band galvanizing line with in-line pickling to expand product capabilities to serve the automotive industry. Completion is expected in second-quarter 2019. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
