Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In 2020, Hiroshi Kajiyama, the head of Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), spoke of the need to phase out inefficient coal-fired power units. Now, METI is drawing up a road map.

In 2019, power generated by coal-fired units made up 31% of Japan's power supply. METI is working to reduce that level to 26% by 2030.

METI is working on an approach that includes:
  • Decommissioning electric power companies' sub-critical and super-critical coal-fired units, replacing them with ultra-super-critical coal and integrated coal gasification, combined-cycle (IGCC) units.
  • Reducing the amount of coal used by power units by mixing in ammonia.
Industrial Info is tracking 11 coal-fired grassroot, unit addition, rebuild and repower projects, worth US$11.24 million, across Japan. These projects have been slated for completion from January 2020 to January 2030. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can click here for a list of detailed project reports.

Subscribers also can click here to view seven coal-fired closure projects in Japan, worth US$40.99 million, that have been planned for completion from January 2020 to January 2030.

Finally, subscribers can click here to view two coal-fired ammonia mix projects in Japan.
