Interest in Nuclear Power Grows as Alternative to Carbon Fuels
April 25, 2022--Written by Paul Wiseman for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--As the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) moves closer to releasing next-step details on its program offering up to $6 billion in support of keeping older nuclear reactors online, it calls to mind the fact that nuclear energy is being brought back into the conversation regarding low-carbon electricity generation.
In 2021, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) created, among other things, the Civil Nuclear Credit Program (CNPC). This program authorizes the DOE to allocate the aforementioned $6 billion toward maintaining older nuclear reactors that are slated for closing for economic reasons and if the closures would lead to higher emissions.
