Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Seattle, Washington, abounds with light rail projects that are under construction, accounting for billions of dollars' worth of projects underway in the city and making up a sizable portion of the $16.9 billion in projects under construction across the state. Other sectors showing strong project activity include the Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry, which boasts more than $1 billion of projects underway.

Seattle-based Sound Transit has been underway with a number of light rail projects in the city for some years. Among the largest of these is the East Link light rail extension, which will extend the East Link corridor by 14 miles of new track from downtown Seattle to neighboring communities, along with 10 new stations. The project kicked off in 2016 and is expected to be completed in early 2023. E-commerce giant Amazon.com Incorporated (Seattle) also is making moves in its home state through no less than 11 projects in various phases of development. Among these is Project Roxy, a grassroot fulfillment center in Arlington, about 45 miles north of the heart of Seattle. The facility will encompass more than 2.8 million square feet and feature more than 300 trailer parking stalls and 51 loading docks. The facility is expected to be completed in the second half of next year. Subscribers can click here for the project report. Other Amazon projects are under construction in Lakewood, Tacoma, Fife and other Washington locations. Subscribers can click here for a complete list.

Among the largest Pharma-Biotech projects underway in the state is The Blackstone Group Incorporated's (NYSE:BX) (New York, New York) Dexter Yard biomed life sciences towers in Seattle. The facility will comprise two connected 14-story towers for mixed use, including about 500,000 square feet of laboratory space for lease to multiple life science and technology-related companies. Construction kicked off in 2019, with Turner Construction Company (New York) acting as general contractor, and is expected to wrap up early next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Pharma-Biotech Project Database can click here for the project report.

Among Washington's projects is environmental remediation at a few metals and minerals sites, including a Superfund site: the old Midnite uranium mine near Wellpinit, northwest of Spokane. The mine was closed in 1981 and has about 23.6 million tons of radioactive waste rock and low-grade uranium ore remaining. The rock is being moved to old pit excavations, which will be capped with 700,000 cubic yards of clean soil. Collected groundwater will be piped offsite. The project kicked off in 2017 and is expected to be completed in 2024. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Metals & Minerals Project Database can click here for the project report.

Other remediation projects in the state include those at a former aluminum smelter (see project report) and former lead smelter (see project report).

Hydropower has a strong presence in Washington's power generation mix, accounting for about 24% of the state's power use in 2019, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Washington's Grand Coulee Dam is the largest power plant by generation in the U.S., with a nameplate generation capacity of about 6.8 gigawatts. Among the state's hydropower projects is the refurbishment of units at the Boundary Hydropower Station, near Metaline Falls. Four 160-megawatt units are being refurbished, including generator stator core replacements, stator rewinds and runner repairs to extend service life. The project is expected to be completed in 2023.
