Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In close to proximity to Washington, D.C., and home to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a light rail project in Maryland's Washington suburbs and 20 Pharmaceutical-Biotech projects help lead the state to $8.8 billion in industrial projects under construction.

By far the largest project underway in Maryland is the Purple Line light rail extension, which entails the construction of 16.2 miles of rail line linking Bethesda and other suburbs in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area without having to go into the city. The line will have 21 stations and a short tunnel, and connect to existing rail lines. Construction kicked off in 2018. The project is anticipated to be completed in 2023, but it was recently put on pause due to a dispute between the project companies and the state over $800 million in unpaid overrun fees. In Bethesda, the NIH is renovating its medical complex. The final phase of the Building 10 renovation includes selective demolition and conversion of about 217,000 square feet of former patient care areas to a Biosafety Level-2 space with lab support as well as office space for more than 600 NIH researchers. The project kicked off in 2018 and is expected to be completed next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Pharma-Biotech Project Database can click here for the project report.

At July's Mid-Year 2021 North American Market Outlook, Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info's vice president of research for the Pharma-Biotech Industry, said Industrial Info was tracking more than $11 billion of COVID-related projects. Maryland is home to at least three of these projects that are presently under construction. Among them is Ellume Limited's (East Brisbane, Australia) brownfield construction of a diagnostic test kit manufacturing facility in Frederick. The facility will be able to manufacture 19 million test kits per month. According to an Ellume press release, the company's home test kit was the first rapid COVID-19 self-test to be granted emergency use authorization by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for both asymptomatic and symptomatic use without a prescription. The facility plans to provide 8.5 million kits to the U.S. government by the end of this year. Subscribers can click here for the project report.

The Food & Beverage Industry ranks a distant third behind Industrial Manufacturing and Pharma-Biotech when it comes to overall project value, but includes one of Maryland's biggest projects being built. AquaCon AS (Oslo, Norway) is constructing a grassroot salmon hatchery near Federalsburg, on the state's Eastern Shore. The facility will include recirculating aquaculture system units and grow-out tanks to raise salmon. The facility is expected to have a capacity of 15,000 metric tons per year. Construction kicked off earlier this year and is expected to be completed in late 2023. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Food & Beverage Project Database can click here for the project report.

Renewable energy also is expanding its footprint in the state with Heelstone Renewable Energy's (Charlotte, North Carolina) Bluegrass solar farm in Church Hill. The photovoltaic facility will use 271,830 solar panels, for a generating capacity of 80 megawatts. Construction kicked off earlier this year and is expected to be concluded next summer. Construction also is underway on a collector substation at the facility to send the plant's power to the grid. Subscribers can click here for the project report.
