First Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona) last summer began construction of a new solar module-manufacturing plant in Perrysburg. The project entails constructing a 1.8 million-square-foot building to manufacture the company's thin-film modules. Other prominent manufacturing projects underway in Ohio include e-commerce giant Amazon.com Incorporated's (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) grassroot fulfillment center in Union, on the northwest edge of Greater Dayton. The 2.8 million-square-foot facility will allow the company to pick, pack and ship smaller items such as books, electronics and other consumer goods. Construction, led by the Whiting-Turner Contracting Company (Baltimore, Maryland), kicked off in summer 2021 and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. While the number of U.S. natural gas-fired power projects has declined over the past few years, giving way to renewable energy projects, Apex Power Group LLC (Mooresville, Indiana) is taking advantage of the abundant gas available from Ohio's Utica Shale and approaching completion of a combined-cycle power plant in Byesville, about 80 miles west of Columbus. The facility will use General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Boston, Massachusetts) equipment to provide a generating capacity of more than 1,800 megawatts (MW). Engineering, procurement and construction contractor Gemma Power Systems LLC (Glastonbury, Connecticut) began construction in 2019, and the facility is expected to begin operations early next year. Several solar power projects also are underway in the state. Among the largest of these is D.E. Shaw Group's (New York, New York) Phase II construction of the Highland solar power plant in Mowrystown. Construction has been underway since the summer of 2021 but was interrupted by supply-chain issues. Phase II construction includes adding 642,000 bifacial monocrystalline modules to achieve a nameplate generating capacity of 200 MW. Construction is expected to be completed in the second half of next year. Subscribers can click here for the report.

Rounding out the top three industries by value for projects under construction in Ohio is the Food & Beverage Industry, thanks largely to a couple of pet food-manufacturing projects. Pet ownership in the U.S. rose significantly during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the pet foods sector has become one the top-investing segments of the U.S. Food & Beverage Industry.

Nestle Purina PetCare Company (Saint Louis, Missouri) is underway with construction of a grassroot manufacturing plant in Williamsburg. According to a company press release, the facility is the company's first new factory built from the ground up since 1975. The 1.2 million-square-foot plant will produce pet foods such as Purina Pro Plan, Purina ONE and Dog Chow. Construction kicked off in late 2020 and is expected to be completed next summer. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Food & Beverage Project Database can click here for the report.

In Lewisburg, about 25 miles west of Dayton, Royal Canin USA Incorporated (Saint Charles, Missouri) is constructing a 450,000-square-foot LEED Silver-certified manufacturing plant. The facility is expected to start operations in the second half of next year. It will manufacture Royal Canin and Eukanuba brand foods for both dogs and cats.
