Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--After emerging from bankruptcy in 2020, global engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firm McDermott International Limited (Houston, Texas) has emerged stronger than ever, with many projects underway or getting ready to commence. Throughout the world, Industrial Info is tracking more than $93 billion worth of projects involving McDermott, including nearly $33.5 billion worth in the U.S.
Dominating McDermott's U.S. project activity are two projects involving the construction of liquefied natural gas (LNG) production plants. Construction on the first of these, Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) (Irving, Texas) and QatarEnergy's (Doha, Qatar) Golden Pass plant in Sabine Pass, Texas, kicked off in 2019 for the first production train. Construction of the second and third production trains kicked off at different times last year. McDermott is providing EPC services with two other companies on the project.
Each of the three production trains will convert approximately 833 million cubic feet per day of natural gas into 6 million tons per year of LNG for export, for a total plant production of 18 million tons per year. Trains 1 and 2 are expected to be completed in the second half of next year, followed by Train 3 in early 2025. The second large-scale U.S. LNG project involving McDermott is Venture Global LNG's (Arlington, Virginia) Plaquemine facility in Louisiana, which is being constructed in two phases, the first of which kicked off late last year. Phase I will see the construction of nine production modules, each capable of producing 1.5 million tons per year of LNG, for a total production capacity of 13.5 million tons per year.
Construction of Phase II is set to begin soon. This phase includes the production of another nine modules, doubling the plant's capacity to about 27 million tons per year. Phase I is expected to be completed in mid-2024, followed by Phase II about a year later. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project reports for Phase I and Phase II.
Also in the LNG sector, albeit on a smaller scale, McDermott is constructing two LNG peak shaver units in Wisconsin for We Energies, (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) to be used in times of high power demand. The facilities, which are located in Ixonia and Bluff Creek, will be fitted with equipment to produce and store LNG, with storage tank capacity of about 12 million gallons each. Both units are expected to be completed later this year. Subscribers can click here for the report on the Ixonia project and click here for the report on the Bluff Creek facility.
In addition to its LNG-related projects, McDermott also is involved in a few high-dollar U.S. chemical projects. Among these is construction of an ethylene-to-alkylates plant for Pasadena Performance Products LP (Pasadena, Texas) that is nearing completion in Pasadena, near Houston. When operational, the facility will consume at least 1.2 billion pounds per year of ethylene to provide about 28,000 barrels per day of alkylates using DuPont de Nemours Incorporated's (NYSE:DD) (Wilmington, Delaware) STRATCO sulfuric acid alkylation process. McDermott is well known for its offshore oil and gas expertise and is currently putting its knowledge into play with the construction of an offshore natural gas export pipeline at Shell plc (NYSE:SHEL) (London, England) and Chevron Corporation's (NYSE:CVX) (San Ramon, California) Whale field in the Gulf of Mexico. As part of the field's development, McDermott is providing EPC services for the construction of a 31-mile pipeline from the Whale platform to the existing Perdido natural gas pipeline, from where it will be further transported to a processing plant in Matagorda, Texas. McDermott's scope of work includes construction, installation and commissioning of the pipeline along with about nine miles of umbilical to connect five offshore drill centers to the new platform. Construction on the pipeline is expected to be completed about a year from now. Subscribers can click here for more information on the project.
