Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is finding wide variety in the $5.3 billion worth of projects we are tracking that are under construction in Mississippi. A $1.9 billion project gives the Metals & Minerals Industry the No. 1 position in regard to total project spending, followed by the Power Industry and the Pulp, Paper & Wood Industry, respectively.
In 2022, leading U.S. steel company Steel Dynamics Incorporated (NASDAQ:STLD) (Fort Wayne, Indiana) turned its sights to aluminum, with plans to build a large aluminum rolling mill and two satellite slab mills. For the flat-rolled mill, Steel Dynamics, operating under the name Aluminum Dynamics, chose Columbus, Mississippi, where Steel Dynamics has operated a steel mill since 2014.
Steel Dynamics broke ground on the new flat-rolled aluminum mill early last year, and since that time, the project has been one of the largest active industrial developments in Mississippi. The new rolling mill will produce aluminum sheet for cans, vehicles and industrial applications. The integrated hot and cold rolling complex will have a production capacity of 650,000 tons annually. The facility will use a significant amount of aluminum scrap obtained from the company's metals-recycling platform, OmniSource. The building will be 53 acres in size, spanning almost three-quarters of a mile in length. The facility is expected to begin production next summer. A few projects in Mississippi are related to the current energy transition, involving green products like electric vehicles (EVs) and solar energy. Nissan Motor Corporation (Yokohama, Japan) has chosen Canton, Mississippi, where the company has had a plant since 2003, as a center for its U.S. production of EVs. Nissan is retooling its Canton plant, a project that, when completed in 2025, will boast the technology to produce two new all-electric vehicles for the Nissan and Infiniti brands. When Nissan announced the project in 2022, the company was targeting a goal that 40% of its U.S. vehicle sales volume be fully electric by 2030. The growth rate of U.S. EV sales has slowed since then, but Nissan appears committed to selling more EVs, and when production begins next year, the Canton facility will help bring Nissan's EV and carbon-neutrality goals closer to reality. Origis Energy (Miami, Florida) is bringing cleaner power to Mississippi in the form of approximately $800 million of projects underway in the Magnolia State. In Lowndes County, where the Steel Dynamics mill is located, Origis is constructing its Golden Triangle I and Golden Triangle II solar plants, which will provide a combined 400 megawatts of solar generation. And for times when the sun isn't shining, each facility will have 50 MW of battery energy storage available.
Despite the solar and storage projects' proximities to each other, each has a different engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firm leading the project. Wanzek Construction Incorporated (Fargo, North Dakota) is expected to complete Golden Triangle I this fall, and Renewable Energy Systems Americas Incorporated (Denver, Colorado) is expected to complete Golden Triangle II by the end of this year. Rounding out the top three industries by spending is the Pulp & Paper Industry. In 2022, after 40 years of operation, a tornado made Hood Industries' (Hattiesburg, Mississippi) laminated plywood mill in Beaumont, Mississippi, inoperable. Last year, Hood made the decision to keep its Beaumont location and construct a new facility there. "Perry County and Beaumont are both very special to Hood Industries. Even after we surveyed the damage of last year's tornado, we wanted to rebuild where it all started. We are part of this community, and they are part of us," President Jay Galloway said in a press release after the company had announced its decision to rebuild in the town. The new mill will be built to the latest mechanical standards and will increase Hood's production from the mill from 380,000 board feet per year to 450,000 board feet per year. The new facility is expected to begin operating in summer 2025. Subscribers to Industrial Info's GMI Pulp, Paper & Wood Project Database can click here for more details on the project.
Southeastern Timber Products (Ackerman, Mississippi) began operating its mill in Ackerman in 1972. In 2018, the company formed a joint venture with Tolko Industries (Vernon, British Columbia) to significantly expand the mill's output. Earlier this year, contractor Andritz Incorporated (Graz, Austria) began turning dirt on the expansion and modernization project. When completed in 2026, the mill's capacity will begin ramping up from 130,000 board feet per year to 300,000. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.
Spending for the country's defense sector can also be seen in the state in the form of RTX Corporation's (NYSE:RTX) (Arlington, Virginia) expansion of its plant in Forest. General contractor Brasfield & Gorrie LLC (Birmingham, Alabama) are constructing a 17,000-square-foot building addition equipped to manufacture the latest mid-band next generation jammers, which are used to disrupt and degrade enemy air defense and ground communication systems. The jammers are being manufactured through a joint cooperative program between the U.S. and Australia departments of defense. Construction began a few months ago and is expected to last about two years. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.
