Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Arizona is home to some of the largest industrial projects under construction in the U.S. Industrial Info is tracking more than $40 billion of projects underway in the state. The industries represented cover an array of sectors, with an emphasis on high-tech undertakings, including the construction of two large semiconductor manufacturing plants and several data center projects.
While in the past the semiconductor sector has moved cyclically in regard to projects, with heavy spending seen every five or six years as new technologies emerge, the sector has been given a shot in the arm as the world faces a shortage of chips. Companies like Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) (Santa Clara, California) and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) (Hsinchu, Taiwan) are making moves toward establishing new manufacturing capacity, and both of these companies have substantial projects underway in Arizona.
In Chandler, Intel is expanding its campus by constructing two new manufacturing plants, which will put a total of six manufacturing facilities at the site. The project broke ground last year, and according to local news media, the $20 billion project represents the largest private investment ever in Arizona. The facilities are scheduled for completion in 2024. Up the road in Phoenix, Taiwan Semiconductor, which has the majority of the world's market share of semiconductors, is helping make good on its plans to double global production capacity over three years with the construction of a grassroot manufacturing facility. The project entails constructing a multi-building manufacturing campus totaling 3.8 million square feet that will include a four-story, 2.3 million-square-foot fabrication building with an initial production capacity of 20,000 wafers per month as well as supporting equipment to manufacture 5-nanometer semiconductors. According to CNBC, no company currently manufactures 5-nanometer chips in the U.S. The manufacturing process takes a large quantity of water, and according to TSMC, the facility will be able to recycle up to 90% of the water used at the facility. A project that will help support the state's semiconductor manufacturing is LCY Group's (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) isopropyl alcohol recycling plant in Phoenix, aimed specifically at the manufacture of electronics and semiconductors. Upon completion in 2024, the facility will be able to take metal-contaminated isopropyl alcohol and clean and purify it for return to the chip manufacturing facilities for use in the manufacturing process. Data centers also are playing a central role in Arizona's project activity, representing approximately $3 billion in projects presently underway. Among the most ambitious is Microsoft Corporation's (NASDAQ:MSFT) (Redmond, Washington) data center campus in Goodyear, on the southwestern outskirts of Greater Phoenix. The projects include both the construction of new buildings and the expansion of existing ones. A 244,600-square-foot building is planned to be completed in the coming months, and some building expansions are nearing completion. Subscribers can click here for related project reports.
Electric vehicles also have come to Arizona, and Lucid Motors (NASDAQ:LCID) (Newark, California) is expanding its manufacturing plant in Casa Grande as part of the second phase of a project. The expansion includes the construction of a 2.85 million-square-foot building addition that will expand production capacity to 90,000 vehicles annually. Construction on Phase II kicked off late last year and is expected to wrap up next summer. Subscribers can click here for the report.
In Coolidge, Nikola Motor Company LLC (Phoenix) is underway with Phase II of its hydrogen-electric semi-truck manufacturing plant. The project entails a 500,000-square-foot building expansion with production lines and supporting equipment to allow the company to produce 35,000 trucks per year upon completion. The project is expected to be completed early next year. Subscribers can click here for the report.
Arizona is not without power projects, with most of them taking the form of solar plants or battery energy storage systems. Examples of projects underway include AES Corporation's (NYSE:AES) (Arlington County, Virginia) West Line photovoltaic plant in Eloy, about 65 miles southeast of Phoenix. The facility will use approximately 240,000 modules on a single-tracking axis system to achieve a nameplate generating capacity of 100 megawatts. The project kicked off earlier in 2022 and is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of this year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Power Project Database can click here for the report.
