South Africa's Petroleum Refining Industry faces a backlash, as more than 40% of its refining capacity is expected to remain offline until at least mid-2021, following fires at two major refineries, according to news accounts. The 125,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) Engen Petroleum Refinery in Durban, which was taken offline in December after a fire struck the facility, is expected to resume operations by mid-2021. Astron Energy's 100,000-BBL/d Cape Town refinery, which was taken offline last year following a fire at its gasoline unit in July, is slated to stay offline until at least early 2022.
