Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--On Monday, the Public Service Commission (PSC) of Wisconsin gave the green light to National Grid plc (NYSE:NGG) (London, England) to begin construction of a solar farm in Portage County, Wisconsin. The project is one of many U.S. projects belonging to National Grid. Industrial Info is tracking more than $11.4 billion worth of active U.S. projects belonging to the company.

National Grid's Portage County facility, straddling the towns of Plover and Grant, will use between 525,300 and 700,400 solar panels to provide 250 megawatts (MW) of generating capacity. Construction is expected to begin in August, putting the facility on track to be in service by late 2024, according to documents filed with the PSC.

The project also will include a 137.5-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) to provide power in times of high demand or when the sun isn't shining. In addition, a 115-kilovolt substation will be built within the project's boundary, as well as a 500-foot transmission line to connect the project to the grid. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can learn more by viewing the project reports for the solar farm and the BESS unit.

Other active National Grid projects in Wisconsin include the Apple River solar plant near Amery. The project, which is still in the permitting stage, would include a 100-MW solar farm and a 100-MW BESS unit. The projects could kick off late next year, taking a little more than a year to complete. Subscribers can click here for the report on the solar farm and click here for the BESS report.

A look at Industrial Info's GMI Database shows that spending for National Grid's U.S. projects that have been given at least a 70% chance of proceeding as scheduled is highest in Ohio. Among the company's chief projects there is the Yellowbud solar farm near Chillicothe, which is nearing completion. Construction kicked off in the summer of 2021 and entailed installing approximately 883,000 First Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona) panels to provide nameplate generation of 247 MW. Kiewit Corporation (Lenexa, Kansas) has provided engineering, procurement and construction services on the project. Subscribers can click here for more details.

Other National Grid projects in Ohio include the Sycamore Creek and Dodson Creek solar plants, each of which will have a generating capacity of 117 MW. The Sycamore Creek facility will be near the town of New Washington, about 90 miles southwest of Cleveland. Construction on the facility involves installing more than 300,000 solar modules and could begin as early as this summer. The Dodson Creek facility will be constructed about 55 miles east of Cincinnati, near Hillsboro. Construction could kick off early next year, taking an estimated year to complete. Subscribers can click here for the report on the Sycamore Creek solar farm and click here for the report on the Dodson Creek facility.

Among National Grid's biggest projects underway is the Copperhead solar and BESS facility in Falls County, Texas. The solar farm will use about 420,000 panels to provide 152 MW of power, while the BESS unit will use lithium-ion technology provided by Fluence Energy (NASDAQ:FLNC) (Arlington, Virginia) to provide 101 MW of stored energy output. Construction on the project kicked off last year and is expected to be completed in early 2024. Subscribers can click here for the full report.
