Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--National Grid Renewables, the U.S.-focused unit of National Grid plc (NYSE:NGG) (London, England), earlier this week announced the start of operations at a solar farm in Ohio that has a power purchase agreement (PPA) in place with Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington).

The Yellowbud Solar Farm in Ross County, Ohio, about one hour south of Columbus, utilizes more than 600,000 of First Solar Incorporated's (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona) Series 6 photovoltaic (PV) solar panels for a solar generation capacity of 274 megawatts (MW).

Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can click here to read a detailed project report.

The project has a PPA in place with Amazon, which will use the solar power for its operations in Ohio. Industrial Info is tracking 29 operational facilities from Amazon across the state. Subscribers to the Industrial Manufacturing GMI Plant Database can click here for a list.

Yellowbud Solar is just one example of National Grid's project activity in the U.S. Industrial Info is tracking $13 billion worth of active projects from the company and its subsidiaries in the U.S., $9 billion of which is attributed to solar.

Two such projects under construction are the $270 million Copperhead solar-plus-storage project in Falls County, Texas, which will generate 152 MW of solar power and feature a 101-MW battery energy-storage system (BESS) unit. The BESS unit will utilize lithium-ion technology provided by Fluence Energy (NASDAQ:FLNC) (Arlington, Virginia). Construction is planned for completion in March.

Meanwhile, the 128-MW, $160 million Wild Springs Solar Farm in New Underwood, South Dakota, is expected to wrap up by the end of the year. Both projects, like Yellowbud, also will utilize panels from First Solar--who has a panel-supply agreement in place with National Grid. Subscribers can see reports on the Copperhead and Wild Springs projects.

National Grid projects in development include the construction of three grassroot solar plants in the Great Lakes region, expected to begin in the first half of 2024 and wrap up in 2025: the 117-MW Dodson Creek solar plant in Ohio, about 55 miles east of Cincinnati, hear Hillsboro; 250-MW Portage solar plant in Wisconsin; and the 200-MW Caldwell solar plant in Kentucky. Subscribers can read reports for the Dodson Creek, Portage and Caldwell projects.

In a May press release announcing its fiscal 2022-2033 full-year financial results, National Grid said capital investment for that period totaled 7.7 billion euros (US$8 billion), up 15% year-over-year, driven in part by "higher levels of investment to drive forward the energy transition and deliver energy security."
