Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking more than $7 billion of projects involving packaged and prepared foods that are under construction in the U.S., and this figure could grow. According to Grand View Research (San Francisco, California), the U.S. packaged food market was valued at $1.03 trillion in 2021 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 4.8% through 2030. Of the $7 billion in underway projects in this sector being tracked by Industrial Info, Nestlé SA (Vevey, Switzerland), which accounts for more than $1 billion in current U.S. spending, leads the U.S. in the value of projects.

Two large Nestlé projects account for most of the company's spending in the U.S., one for beverage products and one for pet food. In Anderson, Indiana, Nestlé recently began construction of an expansion of its coffee creamer and drinks plant. The Anderson plant has been in operation since 2008, and the construction marks its sixth expansion. Among the products the facility produces are Coffee-Mate coffee creamer, Nesquick beverages and Boost energy drinks.

Plant Manager Brian Kaniuk told local news media, "We're adding new products, and the last of eight production lines are being installed." The project also includes the addition of 10,000 square feet of cold-storage warehouse space. The new products will include a creamers for the Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) (Seattle, Washington) brand and Natural Bliss line of Coffee-Mate products. The project is expected to wrap up in 2025. Nestlé's second large project involves subsidiary Nestlé Purina PetCare Company (Saint Louis, Missouri), which is underway with construction of a grassroot pet food manufacturing plant in Williamsburg, Ohio. According to a company press release, the facility is Nestlé Purina's first new factory built from the ground up since 1975. The 1.2 million-square-foot plant will produce pet foods such as Purina Pro Plan, Purina ONE and Dog Chow. Construction kicked off in late 2020 and is expected to be completed later this year. Coming second to Nestlé in the value of U.S. prepared and packaged food projects under construction is The J.M. Smucker Company (NYSE:SJM) (Orrville, Ohio). The company is underway with the construction of the first two phases of a grassroot plant to produce its popular Uncrustables line of frozen sandwiches in McCalla, Alabama, near Birmingham. The initial phases of the project include constructing a 900,000+-square-foot building and the installation of production equipment. According to local news media, the facility will help Smucker meet its annual goal of $1 billion in annual net sales of Uncrustables over the next five years. Phase II construction is expected to wrap up in 2024, when a third phase of construction could begin, potentially adding another 350,000 square feet of production space. Rounding out the top three companies by value of projects underway is food industry giant Mars Incorporated (McLean, Virginia). Like Nestlé, one of Mars' largest U.S. projects is for a pet food plant in Ohio, coming via its Royal Canin USA Incorporated (Saint Charles, Missouri) division. The facility is being constructed in Lewisburg, Ohio, about 25 miles west of Dayton. The 450,000-square-foot LEED Silver-certified manufacturing plant is expected to start operations later this year and will manufacture Royal Canin and Eukanuba brand foods for both dogs and cats.
