Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) announced last week it has commissioned the Wheatridge Renewable Energy Facility in Oregon, the first utility-scale facility in the U.S. that combines wind and solar generation and battery storage. Industrial Info is tracking more than $52 billion worth of active projects from NextEra, more than half of which is attributed to solar. Many of the solar projects have accompanying battery energy storage systems (BESS).

The Wheatridge facility is located three hours east of Portland, and its components include a 300-megawatt (MW) windfarm, 50-MW solar facility and 30-MW BESS. The power generated will reach customers of Portland General Electric (PGE) (Portland, Oregon), which owns 100 MW of the windfarm's capacity, through a newly-built transmission line. NextEra is selling the facility's total output to PGE.

A 250-MW windfarm addition at Wheatridge is in the planning stage and is expected to kick off in April. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can click here for a list of all projects related to the Wheatridge facility.

Nevada leads all other states in the total investment value of NextEra projects, with $8.3 billion. This includes the two-phase $300 million Yellow Pine solar plant, outside of Las Vegas, which entails constructing a pair of 125-MW solar farms and an accompanying BESS at the facility. The first phase and BESS are expected to be completed by the end of the year. Subscribers can see project reports for the first phase, second phase and BESS.

Also in Nevada, the $650 million Esmeralda solar plant, which will feature a generating capacity of 500 MW and a BESS addition, are expected to begin construction in late 2024. Subscribers can see the solar and BESS projects.

NextEra is at work on two solar farms with BESS in Pueblo, Colorado. The Neptune plant will have a generating capacity of 250 MW with 125 MW of battery storage, and the 200-MW Thunder Wolf plant will have a 100-MW BESS. The solar farms will utilize photovoltaic (PV) solar panels from Jinko Solar (NYSE:JKS) (Shanghai, China). Moss & Associates Construction Company LLC (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) is providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services on both projects, which are expected to be completed by the end of the year. Subscribers can click here for the project reports.

NextEra's major subsidiary, Florida Power & Light (FPL), is the largest generator of solar energy in Florida. FPL and Moss & Associates are constructing the $100 million Everglades PV Solar Energy Center in Miami, which would feature 74.5 MW of generating capacity. The project is expected to wrap up in May 2023.

NextEra has 62 gigawatts (GW) of clean-energy generation in operation, according to a recent company presentation at the 2022 Wolfe Research Utilities, Midstream & Clean Energy Conference in New York City.
