Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) is on track for a cleaner-energy future with the construction of a natural gas-fired plant, and several solar and wind projects. While the bulk of this project activity is concentrated in Florida, where subsidiary Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) (Juno Beach) operates, the company's footprint extends throughout the U.S. Industrial Info is tracking more than $24 billion in active NextEra projects.

Among NextEra's undertakings is a massive buildout of solar plants in Florida. Discussing the company's second-quarter 2019 earnings and operational results, NextEra Chief Financial Officer Rebecca Kujawa said, "During the quarter, construction commenced at 10 solar sites across FPL's service territory. The new plants, which will comprise a total of nearly 750 megawatts (MW) of combined capacity, are all on track and on budget to begin providing cost-effective energy to FPL customers by early 2020."

Among the solar plants kicking off construction in the quarter was the Twin Lakes Solar Energy Center in Hollister, about 35 miles east of Gainesville. Like most of FPL's solar plants, the facility will have a generating capacity of 74.5 MW. The project has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $120 million and is expected to be completed in first-quarter 2020. Black & Veatch Incorporated (Overland Park, Kansas) is providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Also in Florida, NextEra is preparing to start construction soon on the Dania Beach Clean Energy Center, a natural gas-fired, combined-cycle facility near Fort Lauderdale. The facility will have a generating capacity of 1,200 MW. Black & Veatch is providing EPC on the project, which has an estimated TIV of $888 million. The facility is expected to begin operating by mid-2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

NextEra also is making strides in battery energy storage systems. In Parrish, Florida, NextEra is in the early planning stage for the FPL Manatee Energy Storage Center, a 400-MW, 900-megawatt-hour storage system that will be constructed adjacent to an existing to solar facility. Construction on the $759.5 million project could begin in the second half of next year, for completion in late 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Outside of its Florida home, NextEra is underway with several wind and other solar projects. In South Dakota, the company began construction earlier this year on the Crowned Ridge wind project, a 300-MW facility in Grant and Codington counties. The facility will include approximately 134 wind turbine generators. Blattner Energy Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) is providing EPC. The project is expected to be completed in 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In Texas, NextEra soon will begin construction on the 80-MW Bonita I and 150-MW Bonita II windfarms in the north of the state. Wanzek Construction Incorporated (Fargo, North Dakota) is providing EPC on the projects, which will use a combined 115 Vestas wind turbines. Construction is expected to be completed next summer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Bonita I and Bonita II.

In Georgia, NextEra is underway with construction on the grassroot, 150-MW Quitman solar power plant in Brooks County, close to the Florida border. The facility will use 600,000 photovoltaic solar power panels. Construction began at the start of this year and is expected to be completed by yearend. Blattner Energy is providing EPC services on the project, which has an estimated TIV of $300 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

NextEra reported second-quarter 2019 net income of $1.23 billion, compared with $781 million in the year-prior quarter.
