Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Like fellow power developers Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina) and NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida), Origis Energy (Miami, Florida) is developing a series of solar plants with a generating capacity of about 75 megawatts (MW) each in various locations in Florida. But the company's home state is not the only place with Origis projects underway; the company's project activity covers a wide swathe of U.S. locales.
Among Origis' Florida projects to most recently secure financing is its 74.5-MW Rice Creek solar plant in Putnam County, which recently obtained tax equity financing. The facility will use about 225,000 solar panels from First Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona), which are being put in place by engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor Wanzek Construction Incorporated (Fargo, North Dakota). The plant has a contract in place with the Florida Municipal Power Agency (Orlando, Florida) to deliver power to 12 of its municipal utilities. Construction kicked off last year and is nearing completion. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report.
Industrial Info is tracking six other similarly sized Origis solar projects in Florida, including two in Alachua County (home to Gainesville), one of which includes a battery energy storage system (BESS). Construction of the 74.9-MW Sand Bluff solar plant near Archer is expected to begin later this year and also will employ First Solar panels. This plant, however, will have an accompanying 12-MW BESS unit to be deployed in times of high demand or when the sun isn't shining. Both the solar and BESS portions are expected to be completed next year. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the reports on the solar and BESS portions of the project.
Origis' other projects are scattered throughout the U.S., with Mississippi garnering the highest investment from the company for a couple of solar and BESS projects. These include the Golden Triangle I solar farm in Lowndes County. Golden Triangle I will provide 200 MW of solar generation and will include 50 MW of battery energy storage. Another nearby Origis solar farm, Golden Triangle II, was completed earlier this year, providing 150 MW of solar power with a 50-MW BESS system. Wanzek Construction is expected to complete Golden Triangle I this fall. Both Golden Triangle projects use Jinko solar panels. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the reports on Golden Triangle I's solar and BESS portions.
Another active Origis project in Mississippi is just starting construction. Like Golden Triangle I, the Optimist solar plant in Clay County will include 200 MW of solar generation with an accompanying 50 MW of battery energy storage. EPC contractor Renewable Energy Systems Americas Incorporated (Denver, Colorado) is expected to complete both portions of the plant in early 2026. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the related project reports. Origis' Mississippi projects have power purchase agreements in place with Tennessee Valley Authority (Knoxville, Tennessee).
Origis is gearing up to start construction on an Indiana solar farm later this year. The Wheatland Solar Farm in Knox County will use approximately 450,000 First Solar panels across a 1,200-acre site to provide 150 MW of emissions-free generation. Should the project run as expected, it would be completed in late 2025. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.
While most of Origis' projects are for solar power, the company is planning at least one standalone BESS system, to be located near Nipomo, California. Origis is considering Canadian Solar (NASDAQ:CSIQ) (Guelph, Ontario) battery technology for the project, which will provide about 100 MW of power for up to four hours in periods of high demand. Construction of the Caballero BESS facility is expected to begin early next year and take about a year to complete. Subscribers can click here to learn more.
