Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--North Carolina is one of the most important industrial players in the Mid-Atlantic market region of the U.S. The Pharma-Biotech sector takes a leading edge in North Carolina's industrial projects, helping lead the state to more than $11.7 billion in projects under construction that are being tracked by Industrial Info.

Among the largest Pharma-Biotech projects underway in North Carolina is one to expand the production of Merck & Company Incorporated's (NYSE:MRK) (Kenilworth, New Jersey) blockbuster Gardasil vaccine, which helps protect against certain strains of human papillomavirus (HPV). Use of the vaccine has steadily increased since it was approved for medical use in 2006. By 2011, Gardasil had been approved in more than 120 countries, and in 2018, Chinese authorities approved its use, greatly increasing the vaccine's global sales. In Durham, North Carolina, Merck is constructing a two-story, approximately 226,000-square-foot building with production space and equipment for the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in Gardasil and Gardasil 9. In addition, the utilities center will be expanded. The facility is expected to be completed later this year. Biotechnology also takes a role in North Carolina's project activity. Examples of projects include Beam Therapeutics Incorporated's (NASDAQ:BEAM) (Cambridge, Massachusetts) gene therapy biomanufacturing plant in Research Triangle Park, between Raleigh and Durham. This first phase of a possible three-phase project entails constructing an approximately 50,000-square-foot facility with equipment for clinical and commercial manufacturing that will use CRISPR technology to create therapies aimed at curing serious diseases. According to the Research Triangle Regional Partnership, the company is "targeting gene therapies in the fields of hematology, oncology, liver diseases, and ocular and central nervous system (CNS) diseases." Construction kicked off last year and is expected to be completed later this summer. Subscribers can click here for the detailed report.
The Industrial Manufacturing Industry takes second position by value in what's underway in the state. Among North Carolina's largest projects in this sector is Toyota Motor Corporation's (NYSE:TM) (Toyota City, Japan) grassroot electric vehicle battery manufacturing plant in Liberty, about 20 miles southeast of Greensboro. Construction kicked off earlier this year, and upon completion, planned for 2025, the plant will have four production lines that will enable it to produce 800,000 lithium-ion battery packs per year, with the ability to ramp up to 1.2 million per year. It's the carmaker's first battery plant in North America. According to local news media, Toyota had been interested in the project site before, but opted instead for Alabama as the location for an automotive assembly plant. Virtually no U.S. state is without a project or two from e-commerce giant Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington), and North Carolina boasts at least six from that company that are under construction. Among the largest of these are warehouse and distribution centers in Smithfield and Fayetteville, both in the eastern half of the state. The Smithfield facility will be almost 630,000 square feet and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The Fayetteville site will be a much larger 1.3 million square feet, and this project, known as Project Bronco, is expected to be completed in the first half of next year. The pet food industry has been booming in the U.S., and Nestle Purina PetCare Company (Saint Louis, Missouri) has become one of the strongest Food & Beverage spenders in the country. In Eden, North Carolina, near the Virginia border, the company is converting a former brewery into a dry dog and cat food production plant. Nestle Purina is aiming for zero environmental impact from company operations by 2030; the Eden facility will incorporate production processes designed to recover and reuse heat and water, and is aiming for zero waste to be sent for disposal. In addition, Nestle Purina is striving to make the facility 100% powered by renewable electricity "in the shortest practical timeframe," according to a company press release. In Asheville, North Carolina, Pratt & Whitney (East Hartford, Connecticut) is underway with a project at a grassroot casting foundry and manufacturing plant. The project includes construction of a 1.2 million-square-foot facility, of which 850,000 square feet will be manufacturing space to house an advanced casting foundry for the production of turbine airfoils. Construction kicked off last year and is expected to be completed toward the end of this year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Metals & Minerals Project Database can click here for the report.
