Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Mississippi is home to a wide variety of industrial projects under construction. In the state, the Power Industry leads project activity by value, followed in a distant second place by the Industrial Manufacturing Industry. Industrial Info is tracking nearly $2.8 billion worth of projects under construction in the state.

By far the largest power project underway in Mississippi involves replacing older, coal-fired units with a cleaner-burning, natural gas-fired combined cycle unit in Purvis. Plant owner Cooperative Energy (Hattiesburg, Mississippi) kicked off the project last summer, and upon completion, the unit will have a generating capacity of 550 megawatts (MW). According to construction manager Burns & McDonnell (Kansas City, Missouri), the plant will be "the most efficient coal-to-gas heat recovery repower project in North America." A couple of solar power projects also are on track to guide Mississippi toward a cleaner-energy future. Among these is Canadian Solar Incorporated's (NASDAQ:CSIQ) (Guelph, Ontario) construction of the Sunflower County photovoltaic solar plant near Ruleville, about 125 miles north of Jackson. Construction on the facility kicked off earlier this year, and it will use 350,000 photovoltaic panels for a nameplate generating capacity of 100 MW. Upon completion, Entergy Corporation (NYSE:ETR) (New Orleans, Louisiana) will assume ownership for the life of the facility. The project is expected to be completed in mid-2022. The Industrial Manufacturing Industry follows the Power Industry in regard to the value of projects under construction in Mississippi, thanks in large part to some large warehousing and distribution projects. One of these comes from the seeming U.S. king of distribution center construction, Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington), which is constructing a grassroot fulfillment center in Canton, known as Project Pine. The 700,000-square-foot facility will have 63 loading docks and 200 trailer parking spaces. Construction is expected to wrap up early next year. The export of wood fuel pellets to markets in Europe and Asia has become notable in the Southeast market region's project activity and trade, and two Mississippi projects are being constructed with this in mind. In Lucedale, about 40 miles north of the Gulf Coast city of Pascagoula, Enviva LP (Bethesda, Maryland) is constructing a grassroot wood pellet plant, which will process wood waste into 500,000 metric tons per year of pellets for export markets. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Alternative Fuels Project Database can click here for the project report. Down the road in Pascagoula, Enviva is constructing an export terminal with two on-site domes to provide storage capacity for up to 90,000 metric tons of pellets. A few sawmill projects also are under construction, such as Southeastern Timber Products LLC's (Ackerman, Mississippi) expansion of its mill in Ackerman. The project entails performing upgrades at the existing sawmill and constructing an additional mill to boost production capacity from 130 million boarded feet per year to 300 million per year. Construction kicked off in the summer of 2020 and is expected to be completed early next year.
