Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian Automotive Incorporated (Irvine, California) has received state funding to expand a plant in Illinois, where Industrial Info is tracking $39 billion worth of active and planned capital-spending Industrial Manufacturing Industry projects.

Rivian said last week it received an $827 million incentive package from the state that will allow the company to expand its automotive assembly plant in Normal. The funds will go toward "expansion of the plant, improvements in public infrastructure and job training programs for Rivian's workforce, leading up to the company's production of its midsized SUV, R2," the company said in a press release. The project is intended to expand the roughly 3 million-square-foot plant's annual capacity from 150,000 vehicles to 215,000 vehicles. Rivian did not announce a planned kickoff or completion date for the proposed $3.25 billion project, but Industrial Info is tracking a tentative kickoff date of October. The highest-valued manufacturing project in Illinois being tracked by Industrial Info is a $12 billion expansion at the Chicago O'Hare International Airport. The project is being developed to construct a new 300,000-square-foot international terminal with 10 new gates that will replace a 55-year-old terminal, in addition to new concourses to make way for larger aircraft. Meanwhile, the data-center segment of the Industrial Manufacturing Industry accounts for $12 billion worth of active and planned projects in Illinois. The biggest of these projects is being built at the site of a former United Airlines (NASDAQ:UAL) (Chicago, Illinois) campus in Mount Prospect. CloudHQ LLC (San Francisco, California) bought most of the buildings on the United campus in 2021 with plans to demolish them and construct three data center buildings, each about 560,000 square feet and featuring more than 80 megawatts (MW) of power. Construction on the first building is expected to be completed in July, after which construction of the other two buildings is expected to occur in subsequent phases. Tech giant Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) (Redmond, Washington) also is at work on data-center projects across the state, including its $250 million grassroot data center in Hoffman Estates, a suburb of Chicago. The project, which is expected to wrap up in mid-2025, entails constructing a 250,000-square-foot data center and an electrical substation, to increase Microsoft's regional data center capacity. Walsh Group (Chicago) is performing general contracting services. Click here for more information.

Other manufacturing projects in the Prairie State include The Boeing Company's (NYSE:BA) (Arlington, Virginia) $200 million expansion of its defense aircraft-manufacturing plant in Mascoutah, which involves adding a 300,000-square-foot building with 12 unique steel-framed buildings and installing production equipment and supporting systems, to produce a military aircraft for the U.S. Navy. The project is expected to wrap up around the end of the year. Subscribers can read the project report.

Industrial Info also is tracking distribution and warehousing projects in Illinois, including the construction of a grassroot distribution center in Montgomery for global chemical production and distribution company Ravago (Luxembourg, Luxembourg). The project entails building a 500,000-square-foot facility with 22 dock positions and four drive-in doors, to allow Ravago to unload, load and store railcars that will help transport plastic resins to customers in the Chicago area. Development Solutions Incorporated (DSI Group) (Chicago) is performing general contracting services on the project, which is expected to wrap up in mid-2025. Click here for more project information.
