Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--While the construction of onshore wind power facilities in the U.S. has taken a secondary role to solar installations, wind power continues to be an important element in the U.S. construction landscape. Industrial Info is tracking more than $5.8 billion worth of onshore wind projects that are presently under construction in the U.S. Accounting for 50% of the project count and more than 70% of the total investment value are the Rocky Mountains and Southwest market regions.

Rocky Mountains
One project in the Rockies region eclipses all other onshore U.S. wind projects under construction: New Mexico's 3,500-megawatt (MW) SunZia Windfarm, being developed by Pattern Energy Group LP (San Francisco, California). The massive windfarm is being constructed over three counties and will boast at least 900 turbines when engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor Blattner Energy Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) puts the finishing touches on the facility in 2026. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report.

While the SunZia project dominates wind construction in the Rockies region, another substantial development is underway about 25 miles north of Laramie, Wyoming, where renewables powerhouse Invenergy LLC (Chicago, Illinois) is constructing the Rock Creek Wind Project, with Blattner also heading up construction for this project. The Rock Creek project includes two phases, construction of both of which began last summer.

Rock Creek I will include more than 30 turbines and will generate about 190 MW of power when it commences operations toward the end of this year. The larger Rock Creek II will have more than 70 turbines generating about 400 MW and will be completed in the second half of next year. While the windfarms are situated contiguously, power from each development will go to separate substations. Rock Creek I will interconnect with Rocky Mountain Power's (Salt Lake City, Utah) Foote Creek substation near Arlington, while Rock Creek II will interconnect with Rocky Mountain Power's Aeolus substation northwest of Medicine Bow. Subscribers to Industrial Info's GMI Project Database can learn more by viewing the related project reports.

While solar projects dominate Arizona's renewable energy sector, NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) isn't letting that stop it from constructing a windfarm in Coconino County near Flagstaff. The Babbitt Ranch Windfarm will use more than 50 General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Boston, Massachusetts) turbines, each rated at 3 MW, to achieve combined generation of 161 MW. EPC firm Blattner began turning dirt on the project in the first half of last year and is expected to wrap up the project later this year. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.

Southwest
Texas and Oklahoma dominate wind power activity in the Southwest market region, together boasting more than $1.3 billion worth of projects under construction. Each state has about 500 MW of wind power under construction and waiting to be brought online.

NextEra is nearing completion of a 301-MW windfarm in Haskell County, Texas, that also features a battery energy storage system (BESS). The Inertia Windfarm will boast more than 100 turbines, each rated at between 2.52 MW and 2.82 MW. In addition, EPC contractor M.A. Mortenson Company (Minneapolis, Minnesota) is installing 100 MW of battery storage. The plant is expected to be online soon. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the reports on the wind and BESS portions of the project.

TransAlta Corporation (Calgary, Alberta) is taking the lead role for wind projects in Oklahoma. The company's Horizon Hill Windfarm in Logan County has been under construction since last year and is expected to be completed this fall. The facility will use 34 Vestas turbines, each rated at 5.8 MW, to achieve total generation of about 200 MW. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.
