Written by Daniel Graeber for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--U.S. federal regulators have granted a request from Cheniere Energy Incorporated (Houston, Texas) to start sending gas from the third stage of its Corpus Christi liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility for deliveries to foreign markets.
Cheniere operates the Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi export facilities for liquefied natural gas, two of the busiest terminals in the United States.
During the three-month period ending June 30, the company saw a combined 155 ships laden with LNG taken from its Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi export facilities. That's 4% higher than year-ago levels.
On Thursday, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) sent a letter to Cheniere granting its request "to commence in service of the terminal supply line associated with the Stage 3 project."
If completed by the end of the year as Cheniere has planned, the third stage at Corpus Christi will have seven processing units to combine for an LNG capacity of nearly 50 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of gas (Bcf) in liquid form each year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Production Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report.
The world leader in LNG exports, the United States sent out 83 Bcf over the seven-day period ending Oct. 16, delivered onboard 22 vessels. Of that, four of those left from Corpus Christi, which was running at 88% of its peak capacity last week, according to data from Industrial Info.
LNG serves a dual role as part of the energy transition and a source of energy security. While there are concerns about methane emissions up and down the supply chain, natural gas in general is viewed as a cleaner fuel relative to petroleum-based products.
With delivery options far greater than piped gas, meanwhile, LNG from the United States is filling the market share in Europe that was held by Russia before the outbreak of war in Ukraine.
"The benefits of U.S. LNG exports to our local communities, the United States, our friends and allies, and to the global effort to improve air quality and reduce (greenhouse gas) emissions are real and verifiable." said Jack Fusco, Cheniere's president and chief executive officer, in an August report.
At the time, Cheniere said it accounted for about 50% of total U.S.-based LNG exports each year and was a major supplier to the European economy, "enhancing energy security in that region in a time of need."
The company reported net income over the three-month period ending June 30 of $3.2 billion, 21% below year-ago levels. Average U.S. natural gas prices during the second quarter were 3.7% below the same period last year, which Cheniere said was the primary reason for the revenue decline.
The company releases its third quarter earnings report on October 31. Cheniere aims to significantly expand its current export capacity through expansions at both Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi.
