Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Everybody must eat and drink, and a strong showing in project activity for the U.S. Food & Beverage Industry in the upcoming first quarter of 2023 shows that U.S. food companies aren't skimping on projects, including expansions, equipment additions and grassroot construction. Industrial Info is tracking more than $12.4 billion worth of food and beverage projects that are planned to kick off in the first three months of the new year in the U.S.
The meat and poultry sector makes a strong showing with nearly $1.5 billion in upcoming U.S. projects. Among these projects is Foote Cattle Company's (Bucyrus, Kansas) planned grassroot beef slaughtering and processing plant near Junction City, Kansas. The project is expected to kick off early next year, and when operations begin, which is expected in 2024, the facility will be able to process about 1,000 head per day. Also coming in with more than $1 billion in planned projects is the fish and seafood sector. Many of the top projects coming up in this sector include aquaculture facilities for the raising of fish and shrimp. Among the largest of these projects is Nordic Aquafarms' (Fredrikstad, Norway) conversion of a retired pulp mill in Humboldt County, California, in the north of the state into an aquaculture facility. The project entails demolishing existing structures and constructing a 600,000-square-foot facility that will be able to produce up to 55 million pounds per year of salmon and steelhead fish. Gilbane Building Company (Providence, Rhode Island) is acting as the construction manager on the project, which is expected to be completed in the second half of 2024. Leading the industry in upcoming U.S. projects by overall value is the warehousing and distribution sector, coming in with about $2 billion of upcoming projects. Many of the top projects in this segment are for cold storage and distribution facilities, such as NewCold Pty Limited's (Netherlands) planned grassroot cold storage facility in Darien, Wisconsin. Upon completion, the facility will be more than 300,000 square feet. While there has been some pushback from locals concerned about rezoning agricultural land for industrial use, the project appears to be moving forward, and the facility is anticipated to begin operating in 2024. The agricultural products sector also is showing strong activity, thanks largely to a buildout in soybean processing plants, driven largely by demand for renewable diesel feedstock. Such projects include Platinum Crush LLC's planned grassroot soybean processing plant near Alta, Iowa. At full operations, the facility will be able to crush 38.5 million bushels per year, producing about 847 tons of soybean meal per year and 450 million pounds of crude soybean oil per year. The facility will be near a railway, which will service the plant. Fagen Incorporated is providing engineering, procurement and construction services on the project, which is expected to be completed in 2024. Subscribers can click here for the full report.
Production of some of the U.S.' favorite candy bars is coming to Mars Incorporated's (McLean, Virginia) plant in Topeka, Kansas, with an expansion project that will add production lines. The project will allow Mars to expand the plant's production of Snickers products and will add lines for the manufacture of Milky Way and 3 Musketeers candy bars.
