Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has granted a renewable developer's request for a solar farm to start generating power sooner than expected. South Dakota is in the U.S. Midwest region, where Industrial Info is tracking $2.5 billion in renewable-generation projects under construction. The region includes North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa and Missouri.

National Grid Renewables, the U.S.-focused unit of National Grid plc (NYSE:NGG) (London, England), told the PUC it could wrap up the construction phase of the Wild Springs solar farm in New Underwood, South Dakota ahead of schedule, and the regulatory agency now will allow it to start operations as soon as March 15, instead of the previously anticipated date of May 1. Wild Springs is South Dakota's first PUC-permitted solar facility to enter operation and will utilize 340,000 of First Solar Incorporated's (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona) Series 6 photovoltaic panels to provide up to 128 megawatts (MW) of solar power. The most recent data from the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), through fourth-quarter 2023, shows South Dakota had only 102 MW of capacity at the end of last year, ranking 47th in the nation.

The Wild Springs project is just one of the $2.5 billion worth of renewable-generation projects underway the U.S. Midwest, and Kansas and Minnesota account for roughly 88% of the spend. Minnesota leads all states in the region in terms of project count, and Kansas' $1.1 billion in spend is attributed to one major wind project.

NextEra Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) $1.1 billion High Banks Windfarm in Republic, Kansas is in the north-central part of the state, bordering Nebraska. The facility will use roughly 200 turbines from General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Boston, Massachusetts) to generate 600 MW of wind power. The project is expected to be completed in late 2024. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), renewables accounted for 47% of Kansas's net electricity generation in 2022--and wind power provided about 99% of that. That year, Kansas had the third-largest share of electricity generated from wind among all states.

Minnesota's renewable activity under construction is buoyed by Xcel Energy Incorporated's (NASDAQ:XEL) (Minneapolis, Minnesota) efforts to close its coal-fired Sherburne County (Sherco) Power Station in Becker, Minnesota and replace the two units with a pair of solar-generation sites with a combined output of 460 MW. Construction on both phases, each 230 MW, kicked off last year. The West portion is expected to begin operations this year, followed by the East portion in 2025. The SEIA notes Minnesota ranks 13th among all states with 2,796 MW of installed solar capacity, which leads all states in the U.S. Midwest region.

In Missouri, Ranger Power (Chicago, Illinois) is constructing the $270 million Blue Bird solar plant in Warrenton, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. The plant is designed to produce 139 MW of solar generation, and construction is expected to wrap up in October. Click here for the project report.

A new report from the SEIA and Wood Mackenzie (Edinburgh, Scotland) notes utility-scale solar deployments totaled about 22.5 gigawatts (GW) in 2023, a new record that was nearly 10 GW more than deployments in 2022.
