Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--As demand for natural gas grows across the U.S., power producers are struggling to keep up. Combined-cycle projects are as popular as ever, but some are being combined with other energy sources, such as hydrogen, in an effort to nudge the industry further toward renewable projects. Industrial Info is tracking about $3.5 billion worth of natural gas-fired power-generation projects that are set to begin construction in the fourth quarter of 2022, more than 60% of which is attributed to a pair of projects on the U.S. Gulf Coast.

The single largest project, Venture Global LNG LLC's (Arlington, Virginia) $1 billion combined-cycle power unit addition at its Plaquemine LNG Production & Export Terminal in Davant, Louisiana, is expected to generate 720 megawatts (MW) for the Plaquemine complex. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can read more details in a project report.

Construction on the main liquefied natural gas (LNG) production lines at the 22.4 million-metric-ton-per-year export terminal also is expected to begin toward the end of the year. Venture Global LNG announced its final investment decision (FID) on the Plaquemine LNG project in May, and shortly thereafter signed long-term sales and purchase agreements with Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) (San Ramon, California) and power company EnBW (Karlsruhe, Germany). According to the company, this is the first U.S. LNG project to reach financial closure since Venture Global's Calcasieu Pass facility in August 2019.

Southern Louisiana, which is seeing power demand rise amid planned coal-fired plant retirements, also is home to a unique power-generation project: Kindle Energy LLC's (Princeton, New Jersey) Magnolia Generating Station in Plaquemine. The 705-MW facility initially will be fueled by natural gas, but later will be able to utilize up to 50% hydrogen by volume, as hydrogen becomes more available in the area. Subscribers can learn more from Industrial Info's detailed project report.

Earlier this month, Kindle Energy ordered General Electric's (NYSE:GE) (Boston, Massachusetts) 7HA.03 combined-cycle plant equipment for the Magnolia project. The Louisiana Public Service Commission approved the project in February.

The continued closing of coal-fired plants and historically low coal inventories are among the factors causing U.S. natural gas consumption to hit record highs. But will rapidly growing domestic consumption constrain the U.S.'s ability to support Europe amid a looming energy emergency? Guam Power Authority is preparing to add 198 MW of generation to the U.S. territory with its Ukudu Power Station in Harmon, Guam. The combined-cycle project is expected to wrap up around mid-2024. It will be built and maintained by the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) (NYSE:KEP) (Naju-si, South Korea), Korea East-West Power Company Limited (Naju-si) and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Company Limited (Changwon, South Korea), under a 25-year agreement with the Guam Power Authority. Subscribers can read more in Industrial Info's detailed project report.

Guam is expected to see an increase in demand for electric power in the coming years amid the planned relocation of U.S. military bases, including a new base that is under construction near the existing Andersen Air Force Base in the island's northern areas. The Guam Power Authority calls the project "a critical part of a bigger plan that will save the ratepayers millions of dollars a year."

Upgrades and replacements account for many of the remaining projects, including Salt River Project's (Tempe, Arizona) uprates of units 5 and 6 at the Gila River Power Station in Gila Bend, Arizona, each of which generates 174 MW. Daigas Group's (Osaka, Japan) 665-MW, combined-cycle Block 1 at the Kleen Energy Power Station in Middletown, Connecticut, is set to undergo an uprate as well. Subscribers can learn more from detailed reports on the Gila River and Kleen Energy projects.
