Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Suppliers of roofing materials have two markets: new construction and maintenance. According to Deloitte, in August 2023, total U.S. construction stood at $1.98 trillion, a 7.4% increase from the previous year. In addition to new construction, providers of roofing materials also are kept busy by owners of existing homes and buildings needing roof replacements after normal wear and tear or a catastrophic event. Industrial Info is tracking more than $1.7 billion in active projects at roofing materials plants in the U.S.

While the Midwest takes the prize for highest level for investment in these projects, the largest number of projects are occurring in the Southeast market region, which includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee.

One of the largest roofing materials projects under construction is from Atlas Roofing Corporation (Atlanta, Georgia), which broke ground on its new grassroot plant in Clinton, Iowa, in August 2023. The plant initially will be 440,000 square feet, with the possibility of expanding to 500,000 square feet, should business warrant the growth. The facility is expected to open in 2025 and will produce all products offered by Atlas, including asphalt shingles, roof and wall insulation, molded products and more. Other companies are expanding existing plants. Late last year, CertainTeed LLC (Malvern, Pennsylvania) began a $100 million expansion project at its plant in Peachtree City, Georgia. The existing 190,000-square-foot facility is being expanded with additional buildings, totaling approximately 65,000 square feet, for more manufacturing and warehouse space. New equipment will enable a 14% reduction in carbon-dioxide emissions from the production process, as well as reduce water and energy consumption. General contractor Forza Group Incorporated (Peachtree City) is expected to wrap up the expansion this fall. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.

While most of the roofing materials projects being tracked by Industrial Info are for the asphalt shingles used in residential construction, Central States Manufacturing Incorporated (Lowell, Arizona) has plans for a grassroot plant in Tooele, Utah, that will manufacture metal roofing and siding for residential, commercial and agricultural properties. Construction on the 115,000-square-foot facility is expected to kick off in the next few months, taking a little more than a year to complete. Subscribers can click here to learn more.

A project in Peru, Illinois, is targeting roofing insulation. Construction began on GAF Materials Corporation's (Parsippany-Troy Hills, New Jersey) new roofing insulation plant in late 2022, with Clayco Construction Company (Chicago, Illinois) providing general contracting services. The facility is expected to be completed soon and will manufacture polyisocyanurate insulation used in sustainable and green building projects. Subscribers can click here to learn more.

Industrial Info also is tracking more than 20 planned maintenance projects at U.S. roofing materials plants. Leading in terms of both maintenance investment and the number of projects is GAF, which has eight maintenance projects planned at facilities across the U.S. The next of these projects is expected to occur this summer at the company's plant in Cedar City, Utah, when the facility will be shut down for two weeks of maintenance, including inspections and repairs to the production lines, mixing and handling systems, hot oil heaters, conveyor system and more.
