Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking more than 75 active projects at U.S. sawmills representing several hundred million dollars in current and potential spending. The Southeast market region garners most of the spending, with major projects occurring in Alabama and Mississippi.

One of the largest U.S. projects occurring at a sawmill is not a grassroot project, but an expansion at an existing mill that will more than double its production. Southeastern Timber Products (Ackerman, Mississippi) is expanding its sawmill in Ackerman. The mill opened in 1972 and has an existing production capacity of 130 million board feet per year in a wide range of specifications. In 2018, Southeastern Timber formed a joint-venture partnership with Tolko Industries (Vernon, British Columbia). Earlier this year, the partners broke ground on major expansions and modernizations of the Ackerman facility, including the lumber yard and planer mill, in order to increase capacity to 300 million board feet per year. The mill is expected to begin ramping up to its new capacity in the first half of 2026. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report.

Staying within the Gulf Coast region, both Louisiana and Alabama will see grassroot sawmills beginning operations within their borders in the coming months. Kicking off operations first will be the Teal-Jones Group's (Surrey, British Columbia) new sawmill in Plain Dealing, Louisiana, in the northwest corner of the state, about 30 miles north of Shreveport. Despite announcing financial troubles earlier this year, Teal-Jones said the Plain Dealing mill would not be affected. Construction of the state-of-the art facility kicked off in the summer 2022 and is expected to be completed in the coming months, when it will begin ramping up to full production of 300 million board feet per year. The facility will be Teal-Jones' fifth sawmill in the U.S.

In Alabama, Two Rivers Lumber Company LLC (Demopolis, Alabama) just kicked off construction of a grassroot sawmill near Kellyton, in the east-central portion of the state. Like the company's other mill in Alabama, the Kellyton mill will specialize in southern yellow pine dimensional lumber. The sawmill is expected to begin operating in the summer of 2025. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the reports on the Louisiana and Alabama grassroot projects.

Other projects aim to improve efficiency and increase output at existing sawmills. Britton Lumber Company Incorporated (Fairlee, Vermont) aims to improve efficiency and operating costs at its sawmill in Bath, New Hampshire, by constructing a wood-gasification system that will allow the company to maximize the value of wood residues produced from the sawmill. The new system will include a 300-horsepower Hurst wood-boiler system and a micro-steam turbine-generator set capable of generating 5 to 10 megawatts. The system will power the plant and provide heat in the colder months. Excess power will be sold back to the grid. The manager of the sawmill, John Moses, said in a press release, "This project helps operations become more efficient and gives us more flexibility with our byproducts as markets change. A new boiler and turbine set us up well for a successful and sustainable future." The project broke ground this summer and is expected to be completed in mid- 2025. Industrial Info is tracking a number of sawmills that plan to add continuous dry kilns to increase production. Having completed an expansion of its facility about a year ago, Blanca Forestry Products (Blanca, Colorado) plans to add a 10 million-board-foot-per-year continuous dry kiln at its Blanca mill in 2026. Biewer Lumber (Saint Clair, Michigan) has had plans for some time to add a continuous dry kiln to its mill in McBain, Michigan. Biewar could begin the process next summer, which would put the kiln on track to begin operating later in 2025. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the reports on the Blanca and Biewer projects.
