Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Soda ash or sodium carbonate is a key player in many important products and processes found in the industrial sector, including detergents, water softening applications, glass manufacturing and as a food additive. The precursor to soda ash, trona, is mined throughout the U.S., resulting in projects at plants and mines in the U.S. that are leading to billions of dollars in investments.

The Green River Basin in Wyoming holds the world's largest known trona deposit, and much of the activity tracked by Industrial Info regarding soda ash and trona is found in this area. One of the largest projects in this location is in the process of wrapping up. In 2019, Genesis Alkali Wyoming LP (Green River, Wyoming) began installing a new solution-mining and processing unit at its Granger mine in the Green River area to boost soda ash production at the facility by 750,000 tons per year--taking production from 500,000 tons per year to 1.25 million tons per year. The project is expected to be completed in the coming months. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Metals & Minerals Project Database can click here for the full report.

Solvay Chemicals Incorporated (Brussels, Belgium) also is underway with an expansion of its trona mine and soda ash plant in the area. The project kicked off less than six months ago and entails adding 600,000 tons per year of soda ash production to raise capacity to more than 3.5 million tons per year, from its present 2.97 million tons. This will be accomplished in part by increasing the throughput for a product dryer from 161 tons per hour to 200 tons per hour of soda ash. The project is expected to wind down in the summer of 2025. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.

Some of the largest U.S. projects involving soda ash are set to kick off in the future. A project in the Green River area is being planned with a new solution-extraction mining process in mind. Construction of a pilot-scale plant by Pacific Soda LLC (Green River) could begin later this year to show that its solution-extraction process is viable. Pacific Soda expects that this plant would generate no more than 420 tons of soda ash in the limited time it operates in order to prove the technology. Following the short operation of this pilot plant, which could begin in late 2025, Pacific Soda would launch construction of a full-scale plant capable of producing up to 6 million tons of soda ash per year. As planned, the facility would require two solution-mining well fields, two soda ash refineries and 240 megawatts of cogeneration. The full-scale plant could begin production in late 2028. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project reports on the pilot-scale and full-size plants, as well as the cogeneration unit.

WE Soda Limited's (London, England) also expects a trona mine and soda ash plant using a solution-extraction process that is expected to kick off in 2025 and, when completed in 2027, would result in the production of 3 million tons per year of soda ash. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.

A unit of Sisecam Group (Tuzla, Turkey) is taking a more traditional approach in a trona mine expansion project by constructing a new ore shaft and refining unit (Unit 8) to increase trona production to 10 million tons per year and soda ash production to 3.5 million to 3.8 million tons per year. The project is expected to kick off this year and is expected to be completed next summer. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.
