Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking more than $13.8 billion worth of projects that are under construction in Washington state. While light rail projects account for much of this spending, one of the state's largest projects is for a dairy plant.
Sound Transit (Seattle, Washington), which operates the public transit system in the Seattle area, has been busy the past few years. In 2016, the agency broke ground on its East Link light rail transit system extension. The project includes construction of 14 miles of track and 10 stations. Also underway is the Lynnwood Link extension project, which entails constructing 8.5 miles of track and four stations that will allow Sound Transit to carry about 50,000 passengers daily. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can view the reports on the East Link extension and the north corridor and south corridor portions of the Lynnwood Link extension.
While the transportation sector accounts for several billion dollars in spending, one of the largest projects underway in the state is for the Food & Beverage Industry and kicked off earlier this year. Darigold Incorporated (Seattle, Washington), the marketing and processing subsidiary of Northwest Dairy Association, is constructing a major new production facility in Pasco, Washington. Upon completion, the facility will process approximately 8 million pounds of milk per day from more than 100 surrounding dairy farms.
It will be outfitted with two specialized milk dryers and two packaging lines for powdered milk products, two butter churns, two bulk butter packaging lines and five consumer butter packaging lines. When the plant reaches full operation, it will produce approximately 175 million pounds of butter and 280 million pounds of powdered milk products annually. Construction crews in Pasco are busy as not only is the Darigold facility going up there, but so are two Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) fulfillment centers, each totaling more than 1 million square feet. Ryan Companies US Incorporated (Minneapolis, Minnesota) is providing general contracting services on both projects Oyster and Pearl as they are known. Project Oyster will feature 98 loading docks and 398 trailer parking spaces and is being designed for smaller items such as books, toys and technology products. Project Pearl will feature 110 loading docks and 304 trailer parking spaces and is being developed for larger items such as furniture, outdoor equipment and pet supplies. Both projects are nearing completion. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project reports on Project Oyster and Project Pearl.
With more than $1.8 billion worth of projects underway, the Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry also makes a strong showing in the state, primarily around the Seattle area. As it puts the finishing touches on a 12-story life sciences building in the city, Alexandria Real Estate Trust Equities (NYSE:ARE) (Pasadena, California) already is well underway with an even larger project--the first of two planned 13-story towers that will be made ready for one single or multiple life science companies. The nearly 490,000-square-foot building will be Gold-certified by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) guidelines, meaning that it will have several "green" features. Among Washington's other projects is environmental remediation at a couple of metals and minerals sites, including a Superfund site: the old Midnite uranium mine near Wellpinit, northwest of Spokane. The mine was closed in 1981, with about 23.6 million tons of radioactive waste rock and low-grade uranium ore remaining. The rock is being moved to old pit excavations, which will be capped with 700,000 cubic yards of clean soil. Collected groundwater will be treated and piped offsite. The project kicked off in 2017 and is expected to wrap up next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Metals & Minerals Project Database can click here for the project report.
