Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--While Wyoming perhaps doesn't immediately spring to mind when it comes to large-scale industrial project activity, Industrial Info is tracking more than $4.5 billion of major projects that are under construction in the state. The projects vary in type, ranging from windfarms to data centers to firearms manufacturing.

Wyoming is home to one of the largest wind power projects underway in the U.S. Construction on Power Company of Wyoming LLC's (Denver, Colorado) Chokecherry Windfarm near Rawlins kicked off in the first half of 2022. Built on both private and federal land, the windfarm will feature 500 turbines, each rated at 3 megawatts (MW) for a nameplate capacity of 1,500 MW.

But the Chokecherry Windfarm is really only half of the project. Construction on its nearby sister development, the Sierra Madre Windfarm, is set to kick off this summer. This facility also will feature 500 3-MW turbines. Engineering, construction and procurement contractor M.A. Mortenson Company (Minneapolis, Minnesota) is expected to wrap up construction on both projects in 2025. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can click here for the report on Chokecherry and here for Sierra Madre.

Also in the wind power sector, although on a less grand scale, is PacifiCorp's (Portland, Oregon) repower of its Foote Creek Windfarm in Rock River, Wyoming. The project kicked off last year and entails erecting 10 Vestas wind turbines, each rated at 4.3 MW. Construction is set to wrap up later this year. Subscribers can click here for the full report.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) (Redmond, Washington) also is cementing its place in the state with the Phase I construction of a data center in Cheyenne. Construction on the single-story, 240,000-square-foot facility kicked off early last year, and upon completion, which is expected in the near future, the data center will increase regional capabilities for Microsoft's Azure cloud computing platform. On the opposite side of the state, in Granger, Genesis Energy LP (NYSE:GEL) (Houston, Texas) plans to complete an optimization project at a soda ash plant later this year. The project entails installing new solution mining and processing equipment to expand production by 750,000 tons per year, from 500,000 to 1.25 million tons per year. Construction kicked off in 2019, but progress was delayed due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent supply-chain issues, pushing back the expected completion of the project from 2022 to the second half of this year. The city of Rock Springs, in southwestern Wyoming, also is home to a couple of noteworthy projects. Last year, firearms manufacturer Kel-Tec CNC Industries Incorporated (Cocoa, Florida) made the first move in expanding its manufacturing footprint by purchasing a 33,000-square-foot building in Rock Springs, which it began renovating into a facility to manufacture small arms. While the endeavor will start small with 25-30 jobs initially available, the facility hopes to eventually employ around 250 people. The renovation project is expected to be completed in the next few months. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.

Also underway in Rock Springs is The J.R. Simplot Company's project at a phosphates plant to better manage hazardous wastes. Specifically, the project will bring the plant into compliance for the treating, storing and disposal of hazardous wastes generated during the cleaning of phosphoric acid, super phosphoric acid and fertilizer plant equipment, and wastewater generated from the scrubbers used to control air pollution. The project kicked off last summer and is expected to be completed in the second half of 2025. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Chemical Processing Project Database can click here for more details.
