Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--On October 8, German company SoWiTec International GmbH (Sonnenbühl, Germany), through Chilean subsidiary Parque Eolico Valle de los Vientos SA, submitted to Chile's Environmental Evaluation Service (SEA) the environmental impact report for a major expansion in the scope of the Valle de los Vientos wind power project, which the company to be built in the city of Calama in the Antofagasta Region.

In May 2010, SoWiTec received authorization to install 33 wind turbines with a total capacity of 66 megawatts (MW). The new proposal increases the number of turbines to 45 and raises the installed capacity to 90 MW. The company is also proposing the construction of a 13.16-kilometer, 110-kilovolt electricity transmission line. If the proposals are accepted, the total investment value of the project will increase by $54.7 million, reaching $254.7 million.

SoWiTec plans to develop this project through the end of the preliminary engineering and then sell it to Enel Chile Limitada (Santiago), a subsidiary of Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL) (Rome, Italy). Enel Chile will be responsible for the construction and operation of the windfarm.

The SEA's decision regarding this expansion proposal is expected in January 2011. Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2011 or early 2012.
