AES Tiete Obtains Environmental Permit for 550-Megawatt Thermo Sao Paulo Project

Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--On October 11, AES Tiete (Sao Paulo, Brazil), one of the generating companies that belongs to AES Corporation (NYSE:AES) (Arlington, Virginia), obtained the environmental license for its 550-megawatt (MW) Thermo Sao Paulo power plant project. The permit was granted by the Environmental Secretariat of the state of Sao Paulo (CONSEMA).

The plant will be located at Canas, which is about 180 kilometers from Sao Paulo. Site selection of the project was based on technical aspects such us the proximity of pipe and transmission lines and the availability of water. The plant is scheduled to begin commercial operations in 2016 and will consist of a combined-cycle module requiring a total investment of $620.2 million. AES Tiete has registered this project to sell its future power output at the A-5 Auction in December.

The project aims at increasing installed generation capacity in the State of Sao Paulo. With this additional 550 MW of power, AES will be able to achieve the 400-MW expansion that was one of the conditions for the handover of the then state-owned company to AES years ago.

AES Tiete relies on a generation park comprised of 10 hydropower plants located in the central and northwest regions of the state of Sao Paulo and seven small hydropower plants in the state of Minas Gerais, adding up to 2,651 MW of installed capacity.
