Spanish Nuclear Plant Almaraz II Stops for 20th Refueling Outage

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Córdoba, Argentina)--Centrales Nucleares Almaraz-Trillo (Madrid, Spain) has begun the 20th refueling outage and general maintenance of Unit 2 at the Almaraz Nuclear Power Plant. The unit began operations in October 1983.

The facility, located in the Extremadura region of central Spain, is equipped with two 1,050-megawatt (MW) Siemens pressurized water reactors (PWR). It was brought offline on Sunday, May 6. According to authorities, the refueling outage will be completed by June 14.

Plant officials informed Industrial Info that approximately 1,100 people and 70 companies have been hired for this project, which is expected to last 39 days. Apart from the refueling, inspection and maintenance works will be performed for the unit.

Spain has five other nuclear power stations in operation: the 466-MW Santa Maria de Garona; the 1,066-MW Trillo power plant; the 1,092-MW Cofrentes plant; the 2,060-MW Asco I & II; and the 1,087-MW Vandellos facility.
