Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Sugar manufacturer Compania Agricola Industrial Santa Ana S.A. (Escuintla, Guatemala) has selected manufacturer ISGEC John Thompson (Uttar Pradesh, India) as the boiler provider for a cogeneration project that is being carried out at its sugar plant in Escuintla.

The project consists of the installation of a coal-fired boiler, along with a steam turbine generator, that will generate an additional 60 megawatts (MW) of energy, expanding the current capacity to 110 MW. A steam turbine manufacturer contract will be awarded in the third quarter of 2012. The cost of the investment is estimated to be about $65 million. Civil works already have been initiated to prepare the site for the boiler installation, and equipment is expected to be operational during 2013.

The sugar plant started operations in 1987. It has a sugar production capacity of 230,000 tonnes per year. The powerhouse currently generates 50 MW of energy for internal consumption and to sell excess to the public grid. About 500 employees work at the facility. The mill is located in Escuintla, the capital city of Escuintla State.

Compania Agricola Industrial Santa Ana S.A. has one operacional plant, and it exports its products throughout Latin American countries.

ISGEC John Thompson is an Indian firm that provides engineering and procurement services, and supplies equipment for power plants and sugar mills. It is involved in many projects that are being carried out in Central America and the Caribbean.
