Researched by Industrial Info Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--Sowitec Argentina SRL (Bahia Blanca, Argentina), a subsidiary of Sowitec Grup (Sonnenbuhl, Germany), are carrying out preliminary studies for the construction of the 75-megawatt (MW) Los Pocitos windfarm and the 130-MW Arroyito windfarm.

Requiring an investment of approximately $160 million, the Pocitos windfarm will be located east of the city of Zapala, in the province of Neuquen. It will have a generating capacity of 75 MW, which will be delivered to the national grid.

The Arroyito windfarm will be located west of Cutral Co, which is also in the province of Neuquen. It will have a generating capacity of 130 MW and will require an investment of approximately $300 million. Based on preliminary engineering studies, 38 wind turbines, each a generating capacity of 2 MW, will be installed. Construction is scheduled to begin in August 2013.

Sowitec expects to obtain environmental permits and achieve financial closure this year for the Pocitos project. The company plans to launch a tender in early 2013 to select the major equipment supplier, which will be responsible for supplying electromechanical equipment, as well as the installation and assembly of the wind generators.

In the case of the Arroyito windfarm, Sowitec will continue with preliminary studies and expects to achieve financial closure by the second quarter of 2013, after which the bidding process for the selection of the equipment supplier will begin. Construction is expected to begin in late 2013.

Through these projects, the government of Neuquen province is trying to promote renewable electricity generation. Another project being developed in the area is the 50-MW Zapala windfarm, which is owned by WPD Argentina (Buenos Aires, Argentina).
