Researched by Industrial Info Research Latin America (Córdoba, Argentina)--The Punta Totoralillo Seawater desalination plant (Atacama Region), which is fully owned by the Chilean iron ore and steel group Compañía de Aceros del Pacifico (BCS:CAP), expects to begin production by September 2013.
Compañía de Aceros del Pacificos (CAP), through division Compañía Minera del Pacifico (CMP), began construction in late 2011 of a 200-liter-per-second reverse osmosis desalination plant in the Copiapo province, as well as an 80-kilometer water pipeline to supply the Cerro Negro Norte Iron Ore Mine, which is valued at $959 million and is under construction in North Copiapo. The Cerro Negro Norte mine is expected to produce 4 million tons per year of iron concentrate, and it is set to start up in early 2014.
As mentioned before, the desalination plant will initially produce 200 liters per second in September, and CMP is already working to increase capacity to 400 liters per second in December 2013. The $300 million project also includes a 120-kilometer water pipeline to provide water to the operational Magnetita Plant, which is located in Tierra Amarilla, Atacama Region.
Compañia Minera del Pacífico operates three iron ore mines in Chile, El Algarrobo (Atacama), El Romeral (Coquimbo) and Los Colorados (Atacama). The latter two are under expansion. With these projects and the Cerro Negro Grassroot project, the company expects to produce 16 million tons by 2016.
