Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--Geodynamics Limited (Milton, Australia) is continuing negotiations with power purchasers to finalize the expansion of the Habanero Geothermal Project by 25 megawatts (MW), following the successful demonstration of a 1-MW pilot project. The project will be developed in Innamincka, South Australia.
Construction of the 1-MW pilot project began in 2012 and became operational in April 2013. A demonstration trial lasted six months.
Subject to final agreements with power purchasers and grid connection permits, Geodynamics expects to begin construction on the second phase by the end of 2015. The project will use one steam turbine and enhanced geothermal system technology in a closed-loop system. According to sources, the project will involve the construction of a 275-kilovolt (kV) transmission line that will connect to the existing grid, which is 60 kilometers away from the site. Geodynamics has applied to ultimately expand the power plant to a maximum of 300 MW.
Geodynamics has several small- to medium-size geothermal projects in its portfolio. It is developing the 8-MW Takara geothermal project on the island of Efate in Vanuatu. The two-phase project was first proposed by the company KUTh Energy Limited (Sydney, Australia), which was taken over by Geodynamics in 2013.
The Takara project will feature a single 4-MW steam turbine in each phase. Geodynamics recently started an environmental and social impact assessment study as part of the project. Subject to the exploration results and approvals, the first stage is expected to begin by the end of 2015.
