Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--Construction of the first phase of the Borkum West II windfarm in the German North Sea has been completed and will now move to the commissioning phase.
Glasgow-based SgurrEnergy, which has been providing technical advice on the project, announced that the last of the 40 turbines are now in place. The windfarm, one of Germany's largest offshore projects, has a generating capacity of 200 megawatts (MW), and on commission, will be able to generate enough power for approximately 200,000 homes. The project is owned by Trianel Windfraftwerk Borkum (TWB), part of Trianel Energie GmbH (Aachen, Germany) ,a joint venture owned by a number of German banks and electrical utilities.
French engineering company Areva S.A. (ENX:CEI) (Paris, France) supplied 40 of its M5000 turbines, rated at 5 MW each for the project, which is located 45 kilometers (km) off the northern coast of the island of Borkum. Areva will also provide commissioning, testing and maintenance services.
"We have enjoyed working closely with SgurrEnergy's team, who have been involved in the project as early as 2009, where they helped progress the development to financial close," said Manuel Eck, managing director of TWB. "More recently, SgurrEnergy's construction monitoring services have been very important in supporting the Borkum West project through the construction phase and we will continue to work closely with them while bringing the windfarm into operation."
Andrew Cole, project manager at SgurrEnergy, said: "SgurrEnergy has been involved in this landmark project for around five years and it's fantastic to see it reach this construction milestone and take another successful step towards completion".
Areva's M5000 turbines have a history in Germany's burgeoning offshore sector, with the model being used in the country's first ever offshore project, Alpha Ventus, back in April 2010.
