Released March 25, 2015 | GALWAY, IRELAND

Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland) - After a long wait, Senvion SE (FWB: RPW) (Hamburg, Germany) has been confirmed as the turbine supplier for the 332-megawatt (MW) Nordsee One offshore windfarm in the German North Sea.

The company has been contracted to supply 54 of its 6.2M126 turbines with a rated capacity of 6.2 MW each. When commissioned the windfarm will be capable of supplying power to more than 215,000 households. The contract is believed to be worth in the region of €500 million ($545 million).

Original project owner, RWE Innogy, part of Germany's second largest power company RWE AG (OTC:RWEOY) (Essen, Germany), postponed the project in 2012, the year it was due to go live, after it suffered delays getting connected to the grid. Last year, Senvion's role in the project was threatened after bearings issues with some of the 6.2M126 turbines were highlighted by RWE.

However, things have moved forward since Canada's Northland Power (Toronto, Canada) agreed to take a majority share in the three Nordsee offshore windfarms in September last year. The move announced its entry into the German offshore sector with the three windfarms promising to deliver a combined 1,000 MW to the grid. For additional information, see September 10, 2014, article - Northland Power Enters German Offshore Wind Market.

Northland holds an 85% stake in Nordsee One with RWE retaining 15%. Both companies have just confirmed that the €1.2 billion ($1.3 billion) Nordsee One project has reached financial close.

"We are very pleased to announce this important milestone," explained John Brace, CEO of Northland. "The financing for Nordsee One was completed quickly for a project of this size, thanks to the skill and diligence of the project's financiers and advisors, and the overall quality of the project."

"Today we have good news for Germany's offshore plans and for the energy transition in general," added Hans Bünting, CEO of RWE Innogy. "By signing the contract today, we have created the financial foundation for realising the Nordsee One wind farm jointly with Northland Power. This is consistent with our strategy of developing partnerships to spread the high costs of realising large offshore projects across several shoulders."

Nordsee One will be located about 40 kilometers north of the island Juist.

The contract marks another significant win for Senvion, which landed contract in February to supply turbines for the 111 MW Nordergründe offshore windfarm in Germany's North Sea. For additional information, see February 26, 2015, article - Senvion Wins 111-MW German Offshore Wind Deal.
