Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Spearmint Energy (Miami, Florida) has received a loan that will support the commercial operation of a battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Texas, where Industrial Info is tracking more than $3 billion worth of energy-storage projects under construction.

Global financial services provider Manulife (Toronto, Ontario) is providing the $47.5 million loan.

The approximately 100-megawatt (MW)/300 megawatt-hour (MWh) Revolution BESS in Upton County, Texas will provide power to the ERCOT grid by utilizing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which contain no cobalt or nickel, developed by Sungrow Power (Hefei, China). Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can click here for the project report.

According to the U.S. Energy Information's most recent Preliminary Monthly Electric Generator Inventory (as of November 2023), Texas (3,167 MW) trails only California (7,302 MW) in terms of installed battery-storage capacity across U.S. states.

Industrial Info is tracking projects aimed at boosting Texas' BESS capacity, including Engie S.A.'s (Paris, France) $650 million Five Wells solar-plus-storage project in Rogers, in Bell County, about 45 miles north of Austin. Construction on the 355.4-MW solar plant and 262.5-MW BESS, which will utilize lithium-ion technology, is expected to wrap up in March. Subscribers can click here to read more information.

For more information on ENGIE's BESS development in the Lone Star State, including its acquisition of energy-storage company Broad Reach Power LLC's (Houston, Texas) assets, see December 26, 2023, article - ENGIE Furthers BESS Development in Texas.

Also underway are another two projects that are expected to be completed in the first quarter: TotalEnergies SE's (NYSE:TTE) (Courbevoie, France) roughly 150-MW, $250 million BESS addition is located at the company's 400-MW+ Danish Fields solar facility in Matagorda County, which also is under construction. Meanwhile, National Grid plc's (NYSE:NGG) (London, England) Copperhead solar-plus-storage project in Falls County includes constructing a 101-MW BESS to provide the approximately 152-MW solar facility with power in times of high demand or when the sun isn't shining. Subscribers can click here to read more information on the Danish Fields projects, and here for the Copperhead project report.

Industrial Info also is tracking Key Capture Energy's (Albany, New York) standalone, roughly 105-MW Limousin Oak BESS in Grimes County, about 40 miles northwest of Houston. It will utilize Powin's (Portland, Oregon) Centipede lithium-ion technology, which the company says requires 50% less time to procure and deploy and 30% less space onsite than the company's previous generations of battery-storage technology.
