Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Renewable Environmental Solutions LLC (Downers Grove, Illinois) a joint venture company formed between ConAgra Foods Incorporated (NYSE: CAG) (Omaha, Nebraska) and privately held Changing World Technologies (West Hempstead, New York) are preparing the final touches on a new $20 million Turkey-to-Oil poultry waste processing plant at ConAgra's turkey processing plant in Carthage, Missouri.
This first of its kind commercial scale plant will utilize a thermal processing technology called thermal depolymerization process technology that will convert offal waste, tallow, grease and bird feathers into crude oil and useable fuel.
The 10,000 square foot plant is built on the ConAgra plant site at 411 North Main Street in Carthage and once the plant becomes operational sometime during early July of this year, the company estimates it will be able to produce some 500 barrels of oil per day.
The process entails five steps: (1) Pulping and slurrying the organic feed with water. (2) Heating the slurry under pressure to the desired temperature. (3) Flashing the slurry to a lower pressure to separate the mixture. (4) Heating the slurry again (cooking) to drive off water and produce light hydrocarbons and (5) separating the end products.
Upon the successful commercial operation of the facility, plans are in place to construct more Turkey-to-Oil conversion plants in the future at other ConAgra locations in Enterprise, Alabama; Fernley, Nevada and Longmont, Colorado.
Statistics from Changing World Technologies estimate that the U.S. generates some six billion tons of agricultural waste every year and the company estimates it could use this waste stream to generate four billion barrels of oil and meet over half of the country's current oil needs.
Renewable Environmental Solutions is a limited liability partnership formed to commercialize the thermal depolymerization process technology in the agricultural and food industries. Changing World Technologies is a privately held company dedicated to identifying emerging technologies that address specific needs concerning energy and the environment and developing them into viable business solutions.
