Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Alpine Energy Group LLC (AEG) (Englewood, Colorado) plans to build a refuse-derived fuel (RDF) processing and recycling facility for the residents of St. Croix, in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The plant will use municipal solid waste from the islands of St. Thomas and St. Croix to create clean, renewable energy.
AEG will invest about $160 million in the project. AEG had originally planned to develop two alternative energy facilities, one for the islands of St. Thomas and St. John, and the other for St. Croix. However, for various reasons, the company will concentrate on St. Croix only. Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority and Virgin Islands Waste Management have signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with affiliates of AEG to buy the power that will be produced.
The power station will provide 16.5 MW of power, which will provide enough electricity for about 30,000 households. The facility will convert 200 tons per day of municipal solid waste into approximately 150 tons per day of RDF using commercial processing equipment and technology supplied by WastAway Services LLC (Morrison, Tennessee).
The facility will have the ability to use alternative fuels to generate power from biomass, energy crops, rum bottoms, tire-derived fuel and sewage sludge. The power station will create 300 construction jobs and about 60 permanent positions when finished.
