Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In early August, American Municipal Power (AMP) (Columbus, Ohio) held the groundbreaking ceremony for a powerhouse addition at the company's Cannelton Lock & Dam Hydroelectric Plant in Hawesville, Kentucky. The project is one of five AMP run-of-river hydroelectric projects at existing dams along the Ohio River that will add 350 megawatts (MW) to AMP's renewable energy portfolio.
The Cannelton project, which is set to begin construction in earnest this month, will provide employment for at least 200 construction workers in the area and entails the installation of three 28-MW Voith Siemens Kaplan turbine-generators. Commercial operation is scheduled to commence in late 2013.
Requests for Qualifications (RFQs) are currently open for two similar AMP powerhouse projects. The Smithland Hydroelectric project in Smithland, Kentucky, about 40 miles northeast of Paducah, Kentucky, will consist of the installation of three 24-MW turbine-generators and a 161-kilovolt (kV) takeoff structure for connection to the grid. Construction is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2011 and last until late 2014.
RFQs are also being solicited for the Meldahl Hydroelectric project near Hamilton, Ohio. This project will install three 35-MW Voith Siemens turbines. When complete, the facility will be the largest hydropower plant on the Ohio River. Prequalification documents can be submitted to AMP until October 4.
