American Renewables Secures Financing for 117-Megawatt Biomass Power Plant in Florida

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--American Renewables LLC (Boston, Massachusetts), an affiliate of Tyr Energy Incorporated (Overland Park, Kansas), has secured financing to continue construction of a 117-megawatt biomass-fired power plant in Gainesville, Florida. The estimated $500 million project began construction in March 2011, and total financing for the project will allow American Renewables to stay on schedule for a late 2013 commissioning of the plant.

Fagen Incorporated (Steamboat Springs, Colorado) was awarded the EPC contract for the project, and site work has been completed. Plans call for the installation of a wood fuel handling and pre-treatment system, a bubbling fluidized bed boiler provided by Metso Power (Charlotte, North Carolina) and a condensing steam turbine-generator with an evaporative cooling tower. The biomass plant will process wood waste from tops and limbs of harvested trees, wood waste from contractors, and remains from lumber mills. An estimated 1 million tons of wood waste will be required annually.

The plant is located near Gainesville Regional Utilities' coal-fired Deerhaven power station. American Renewables has secured a 30-year contract with the utility to purchase all of the electricity generated from the facility.

Once operational, NAES Corporation (Issaquah, Washington) will provide operations and maintenance services for the plant. Leading local biomass management company BioResource Management Incorporated (Gainesville, Florida) will provide procurement of feedstock for the Gainesville Renewable Energy Center.

American Renewables is planning a biomass-fired power plant of the same size in Hamilton County, Florida, and sold the rights to a similar plant in Nacogdoches, Texas, to Southern Company Services (Birmingham, Alabama).
