Aquila Breaks Ground on 342-Megawatt South Harper Peaking Project in Missouri

Groundbreaking for the project started in mid-October 2004, and is scheduled to be ready for commercial operation by July 2005.

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Aquila Incorporated (NYSE:ILA)(Kansas City, Missouri) has started site preparation for the $100 million, 342-megawatt South Harper Peaking Power Station, located in Peculiar, Cass County, Missouri.

Groundbreaking for the project started in mid-October 2004, and is scheduled to be ready for commercial operation by July 2005. The plant will consist of three natural gas-fired 114-megawatt Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation W501D5A combustion turbine generators. The project will also feature state-of-the art air emissions-reduction technology including dry low-NOx burners for the reduction of NOx emissions. Upon completion, South Harper will operate in a simple-cycle peaking capacity, limited to 2,000 hours of operation per turbine and a limited total of 5,000 operating hours for all turbines combined in a 12-month period. Aquila plans to add dual-fuel capability and install heat recovery steam generators for power augmentation at a future date.

Sega Incorporated, headquartered in Stillwell, Kansas, was awarded the owner's engineering contract for the project. Three companies are currently being reviewed for the general construction contract: Capital Electric of Kansas City; Missouri; AZCO Incorporated based in Menasha, Wisconsin; and Greycor Incorporated, headquartered in Homewood, Illinois.
