Barrick Gold Completes Construction of $100 Million Western 102 Generation Project in Nevada

Barrick Gold Corporation (NYSE:ABX) (Toronto, Ontario) has completed construction and is in start-up testing for the $100 million 114-megawatt (MW) Sparks Western 102 Generation plant located in Sparks, Washoe County, Nevada.

Construction on the project started in December of 2004, and was completed by April of 2005. Full commercial operation is set to commence within a couple weeks. The project consists of fourteen 8.10MW natural gas-fired Wärtsilä North America 20V34SG reciprocating diesel engines. The new plant will be utilized to meet the electrical demands for Barrick Gold’s existing Goldstrike mine property.

Power Engineers, Incorporated, headquartered in Boise, Idaho provided the engineering services for the project. Wärtsilä North America is based in Houston, Texas and served as the general contractor.
