Barrick Gold Corporation Commences Site Preparation for $100 Million Power Project in Nevada

Barrick Gold Corporation (NYSE:ABX ) (Toronto, Ontario) has started site preparation for the $100 million, 114-megawatt (MW) Sparks Western 102 Generation Plant located in Sparks, Washoe County, Nevada.

The next phases of construction are planned to kick-off next month, with delivery of the first engines expected to arrive in the second quarter of 2005. The new plant is expected to reach commercial operation by the Fall of 2005 and consist of fourteen 8.10MW natural gas-fired Wärtsilä North America 20V34SG reciprocating diesel engines supplying electricity to Barrick Gold's Goldstrike property.

Power Engineers Incorporated headquartered in Boise, Idaho will provide the engineering services for the project. Wärtsilä North America based in Houston, Texas, will act as the turnkey contractor for the project.
