Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). British Columbia Hydro & Power Authority (BC Hydro) (Vancouver, British Columbia), which currently provides power to 94% of the population of British Columbia, has recently released a capital project spending budget of over $3.8 billion to be spent over the next ten years that covers ongoing and proposed projects.
Currently, there are several capital projects already underway. These projects are geared to extend the life and increase the capacity of existing BC Hydro power plants by approximately 300 megawatts. Proposals for new generation will be submitted to the British Columbia Utilities Commission and the Provincial cabinet at the end of this year. The proposals will add an additional 2,800 megawatts to the BC Hydro fleet, which currently generates, transmits, and distributes over 11,500 megawatts of power to 1.4 million customers through its hydroelectric, geothermal, and natural gas power stations.
The most controversial proposal calls for the construction of a 900 MW hydroelectric plant in Fort Saint Johns, British Columbia, located along the Peace River. The Fort Johns or Site C project would take approximately ten years, and cost over 2.1 billion dollars to complete. It would call for a third mega-dam on the Peace River, and the flooding of a valley 80 kilometers in diameter. This project has been under consideration for the last 30 years.
